With a DXOMARK Selfie score of 125, the Vivo X90 Pro+ delivered a decent performance in our front camera tests but could not keep up with the very best devices in the Ultra-Premium segment. Overall, the camera provided pleasant image and video rendering, with good exposure, pleasant colors and nice skin tones, across a large array of shooting conditions. However, the top Selfie devices in its class are capable of producing better contrast in still images and a wider dynamic range in video mode.

The Vivo X90 Pro+ provided an overall average display performance for a flagship. The highlight of the smartphone’s screen was its color performance, where it achieved a top score for its consistently good and faithful color rendering in indoor and low-light conditions. The Vivo X90 Pro+’s screen colors maintained uniformity and color fidelity for the most part. In outdoor testing under direct sunlight, the device did not reach the 1800 nits of maximum brightness advertised. But when challenged to an extremely bright environment of more than 100K lux, the device’s screen attained 1500 nits. The X90 Pro+’s display performance stumbled when watching HDR10 videos because of low brightness levels and low contrast, which erased details from the content’s dark tones. In terms of brightness and contrast management in HDR videos, the Vivo X90 Pro actually outperformed the X90 Pro+. While high brightness mode generally improved the screen’s readability, it would degrade picture rendering when viewed under sunlight.

The display can convince with the desired resolution, the storage is sufficient, there is a good battery capacity and the charging process is also pleasing. The storage capacity along with the fast Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 delivers plenty of performance. Now ask yourself, if you're like me and the first thing you read is the conclusion, what's the catch? It's not the price, since even the 512 GB flagship is sold for just around $1,000. I'll tell you: The Vivo X90 Pro+ is only available in China and the processor gets pretty hot under full load. The China thing is actually not a problem either, TradingShenzhen supplies the device and the German and all other system languages are on board. But there are endless Chinese applications. But there are just as many cool features to discover with Origin OS 3.0. It definitely never gets boring with this smartphone and on top of that, you get one of the best cameras on top. If you can and want to make this compromise, you will probably have a lot of fun with the Vivo X90 Pro+.

The Vivo X90 Pro+ represents a significant evolution over last year’s Vivo X80 Pro as it is both the first smartphone we tested to come with Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, and the first Vivo to use a 1-inch sensor in the main camera module. Like previous Vivo flagships, it also features Zeiss T* optical coating on the lenses. With such impressive camera hardware, it’s no surprise the Vivo X90 Pro+ offered quite detailed still images in our testing across all light conditions. The large 1-inch sensor’s ability to collect light was also noticeable in terms of image noise, which was well under control, especially in bright light and indoors. The X90 Pro+ photos also showed good exposure management as well as a fairly accurate white balance in most situations. We noticed some drawbacks when it came to color, though, with inaccurate rendering of dark skin tones in backlit scenes, as well as some color quantization under indoor lighting and lower illumination levels. In addition to the primary camera, the Vivo X90 Pro+ features an ultra-wide-angle module with a 14mm equivalent focal length, as well as two telephoto lenses equivalent to 50mm and 90mm. vivo X90 review - How good is the base vivo X90 camera phone?

Overall, the vivo X90 is a pretty good camera phone that can handle both night and day fairly well. The MediaTek Dimensity 9200 chipset and V2 ISP chip does speed up photo taking, but while the cameras can capture striking images, they can be a bit unreliable at times, especially where Bokeh or blurry background or portrait shots are involved. At RM3699 it’s still pretty pricey but considering that you’ll have to add on another RM1399 to get the X90 Pro with the 1-inch Sony IMX989 sensor, this is acceptable if you’re looking for the latest vivo camera phone. In this price range, there aren't many new contenders for this year, except perhaps the OnePlus 11 which uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, up to 16GB RAM and 50MP triple rear cameras going for RM3599. Other smartphones would be mostly from last year but even then, there's plenty of choices, so it's all a matter of whether you're a vivo fan or not.

Okay, conclusion time – Well, the price of the Vivo X90 is at RM3,699 and I honestly have to say – it’s actually a good price. It’s a slight increase over the X80 from last year, which I think is reasonable, to be honest. It has a unique camera system, a great chipset with exceptionally good battery life – and a great design. Just drop the “XTREME IMAGINATION” and it’ll look even better.

90% Vivo X90 Pro Review: Meeting Expectations?

Vivo's X series has a reputation of offering a unique photography experience and the new X90 Pro is no different. The rear primary and portrait camera sensors deliver excellent performance. Photos taken by the main camera at times felt like they were captured using a dedicated camera. System performance, display quality and battery life with quick charging are very good as well. The phone has a premium design and comes with an IP68 rating. However, there are a few misses along the way in the Vivo X90 Pro which do stack up, especially when you factor in the price. The ultra-wide camera is not very impressive and we feel that the X80 Pro did a much better job. We weren't too happy with the processed images from the selfie camera either when using Portrait mode. Other misses would be the lack of a periscope camera, a lower-resolution and non-LTPO display, and an optical fingerprint sensor instead of ultrasonic — all of which are present on the Vivo X80 Pro, which is still available and is a bit cheaper. The competition has also caught up. The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra (Review) has set a benchmark when it comes to providing a versatile camera experience, but it's also quite a bit more expensive. The Xiaomi 13 Pro (Review) is probably the closest competitor to the X90 Pro right now and apart from not having an official IP rating in India, it easily matches (and exceeds in some areas) the performance of the X90 Pro while costing a bit less. There is also the Google Pixel 7 Pro (Review) which offers an excellent camera system and a unique software experience.

Although the price is competitive, the smartphone would be even more desirable at a slightly lower price. Overall, I had a great experience with the Vivo X90 Pro, particularly while testing out its camera in majestic Vietnam. It is a great tool for people looking to improve their photography skills as it will compel you to explore your interest in photography if you haven't already.

90% Vivo X90 Pro Review: Meeting Expectations?

Vivo's X series has a reputation of offering a unique photography experience and the new X90 Pro is no different. The rear primary and portrait camera sensors deliver excellent performance. Photos taken by the main camera at times felt like they were captured using a dedicated camera. System performance, display quality and battery life with quick charging are very good as well. The phone has a premium design and comes with an IP68 rating. However, there are a few misses along the way in the Vivo X90 Pro which do stack up, especially when you factor in the price. The ultra-wide camera is not very impressive and we feel that the X80 Pro did a much better job. We weren't too happy with the processed images from the selfie camera either when using Portrait mode. Other misses would be the lack of a periscope camera, a lower-resolution and non-LTPO display, and an optical fingerprint sensor instead of ultrasonic — all of which are present on the Vivo X80 Pro, which is still available and is a bit cheaper. The competition has also caught up. The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra (Review) has set a benchmark when it comes to providing a versatile camera experience, but it's also quite a bit more expensive. The Xiaomi 13 Pro (Review) is probably the closest competitor to the X90 Pro right now and apart from not having an official IP rating in India, it easily matches (and exceeds in some areas) the performance of the X90 Pro while costing a bit less. There is also the Google Pixel 7 Pro (Review) which offers an excellent camera system and a unique software experience.

The Vivo X90 Pro is an excellent smartphone for those who prioritize camera performance and stylish design. The camera app offers various modes and styles that can make your pictures appear dramatic. You can even shoot a portfolio using its RAW mode. While the camera is the standout feature, the phone performs well in day-to-day usage, with a decent battery life that can last a day if usage is moderate. Additionally, the 120W fast charging support refills the battery up to 50 per cent in less than 8 minutes, which solves half of the problems one can face. The design of the phone is premium, but the camera bump may pose an issue. The bloatware, as with previously launched Vivo phones, remains within the ecosystem. The Vivo X90 Pro is priced at Rs 84,999 for the 12GB RAM and 256GB variant, which is on the higher side. Although the price is competitive, the smartphone would be even more desirable at a slightly lower price. Overall, I had a great experience with the Vivo X90 Pro, particularly while testing out its camera in majestic Vietnam. It is a great tool for people looking to improve their photography skills as it will compel you to explore your interest in photography if you haven't already.

Vivo managed to combine arguably the best camera sensor (for smartphones) currently available with excellent software, and ZEISS optics to provide a truly outstanding experience. The Vivo X80 Pro had its issues with consistency, but the Vivo X90 Pro does not show such problems. I do wish Vivo released the Vivo X90 Pro+ globally, as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 would offer better battery life, and the periscope camera would be useful. We were satisfied with the vivo X90 Pro battery life and impressed by its 120W fast charging. The stereo speakers turned out pretty good, too. But what was outstanding across the board was the rear camera photo and video quality. The partnership between Vivo and Zeiss has produced one of the best and most consistent image-processing outputs we've seen. All photos and videos we took with the rear cameras are simply stunning. There is no doubt that this alone is enough to rank the vivo X90 Pro among the best cameraphones in the world. The zoom options are limited to 2x, which is another aspect that doesn't sit well in light of what the competition is doing. A cameraphone of this magnitude deserves better! There’s no denying the Vivo X90 Pro’s main camera takes a stunning photo, with a natural depth of field that no portrait mode comes close to matching. It’s a very capable phone elsewhere, too, with great battery life, rapid charging and high-end performance. It does regress in a few places, though. The periscope zoom lens and gimbal stabilisation tech seen in its predecessor are absent here, and screen resolution has taken a hit. That 1-inch sensor goes a long way to making up for it, but means it’s not quite as versatile as premium rivals from Samsung or Google. According to Vivo the X90 Pro will make its way to Europe – we just don’t know exactly when. The same was said about the X80 Pro last year, and that proved very tricky to find in the UK, so we’re hoping things have improved for 2023. We only know Malaysian pricing, at 4,999 MYR (about £950), so it’s going to command a premium figure once it gets to Blighty. Still, if you prefer close-ups and bokeh blur to zoomed-in snaps, it’ll be well worth tracking one down.

The Vivo X90 Pro is an impressive phone in every regard - it has a lovely design, fantastic performance, solid battery life, super-fast charging and one of the most impressive cameras that we've ever tested. Really, the only thing we don't like is the amount of bloatware that comes bundled into Funtouch OS. Most of this can be removed, or hidden in the app drawer and mostly forgotten about, but it would be nice to not have to go through the hassle. Another hang-up is the pricing, as it stands we don't know the recommended retail price for the UK and Europe. There’s no denying the Vivo X90 Pro’s main camera takes a stunning photo, with a natural depth of field that no portrait mode comes close to matching. It’s a very capable phone elsewhere, too, with great battery life, rapid charging and high-end performance. It does regress in a few places, though. The periscope zoom lens and gimbal stabilisation tech seen in its predecessor are absent here, and screen resolution has taken a hit. That 1-inch sensor goes a long way to making up for it, but means it’s not quite as versatile as premium rivals from Samsung or Google. According to Vivo the X90 Pro will make its way to Europe – we just don’t know exactly when. The same was said about the X80 Pro last year, and that proved very tricky to find in the UK, so we’re hoping things have improved for 2023. We only know Malaysian pricing, at 4,999 MYR (about £950), so it’s going to command a premium figure once it gets to Blighty. Still, if you prefer close-ups and bokeh blur to zoomed-in snaps, it’ll be well worth tracking one down.

Really, the only thing we don't like is the amount of bloatware that comes bundled into Funtouch OS. Most of this can be removed, or hidden in the app drawer and mostly forgotten about, but it would be nice to not have to go through the hassle. Another hang-up is the pricing, as it stands we don't know the recommended retail price for the UK and Europe. Qualcomm Adreno 740: Graphics chip for smartphones and tablets that is integrated within the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC. Qualcomm claims that it is 25% faster than the Adreno 730 in the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and first benchmarks show that the GPU can beat the Apple A16 iGPU (previously the fastest smartphone GPU). 

ARM Immortalis-G715 MP11: The ARM Immortalis-G715MC11 is an integrated high-end graphics card for smartphones with 11 of the 16 possible cores. It is based on the third generation of the Valhall architecture by ARM and offers a 15% higher performance than the previous generation. The G715 is the first mobile GPU with hardware ray tracing support and also supports variable rate shading (VRS).

These graphics cards are not suited for Windows 3D games. Office and Internet surfing however is possible.

Qualcomm Snapdragon:

SD 8 Gen 2: High-end SoC for smartphones that was introduced in late 2022 with a fast prime core based on a ARM Cortex-X3 architecture clocked at up to 3.2 GHz. Two more performance cores are based on the A715 and also support only 64 bit applications. The two additional A710 cores support also 32 bit applications as do the power saving Cortex-A510 cores. In addition to the processor cores, the SoC integrates a WiFi 7 modem, a Hexagon DSP (for AI acceleration) and a Spectra ISP. The integrated memory controller supports fast LPDDR5x memory with up to 4,200 MHz. 5G is included in the chip with the Snapdragon X70 modem.
