Verizon to finally update original Galaxy Tab to Android 2.3.5

The Gingerbread update is "coming soon" for the Verizon 7-inch, single-core Galaxy Tab

The original 7-inch Galaxy Tab, which was introduced sometime mid 2010, will now be getting its long overdue Gingerbread update under Verizon in the U.S.

The 2.3.5 update is expected to bring a host of new features, including improved PIN security, copy-and-paste functionality, a new download manager, widget enhancements and even the ability to use the front-facing camera as a camcorder.

Exactly when the update will arrive, however, is currently unknown. Verizon is only providing a “COMING SOON!” remark regarding the software update, further tantalizing Galaxy Tab owners on the Gingerbread upgrade. Whether or not the device will ever be upgraded to Honeycomb is becoming ever more unlikely, while Ice Cream Sandwich would be completely out of the question for this 1GHz single-core tablet.

The 7-inch Galaxy Tab will soon be eclipsed by its successor, the Honeycomb-equipped 7-inch Galaxy Tab Plus. Already in its pre-order stages, the 1.2GHz dual-core tablet is set for a November 13^th launch starting at $399. The device has not yet been confirmed for Verizon, although it will support HSPA+ broadband connectivity.
