Toshiba introduces 14" USB Display Link screen

14" display provides video and power through single USB connection; useful on the road

For the folks out there that are used to a multi-monitor setup at home but lament the lack of a 2nd screen on the go, Toshiba is looking to provide a quality solution. The newly announced Toshiba USB Mobile LCD Monitor uses Display Link technology to provide power and video through one USB 2.0 connection.

Although Display Link USB monitors have been around since 2006, this marks the first Toshiba USB screen to hit the market. The 14” LCD screen features a 1366x768 pixel resolution similar to standard notebook displays. The display also has a 400:1 contrast ratio, a 16ms response time, and up to 220nits of brightness. Unfortunately, the display only supports up to 256,000 colors and it probably won’t be very useful for video editing and gaming.

Some other interesting points about the display include a built in case that also doubles as a stand, a 1.27 kg weight, and just about ½ inch in thickness. Toshiba is marketing the screen towards “road-warriors” looking to increase screen real estate on the go, but it could provide a decent regular 2nd screen option or a 3rd screen for those with occupied HDMI/VGA ports. The display is currently available from ToshibaDirect.com for the price of $199 and should be compatible with any PC running Windows OS.
