AI has been an integral part of the tech industry for several years now. After Microsoft began trying to establish its Copilot AI assistant years ago, laptops featuring the new RTX chips are now on the market, designed primarily to run local AI models.
Like Apple's M-series processors or AMD's Strix Halo, the RTX chips combine the processor and graphics card with shared memory. This architecture is intended to allow even larger AI models to run locally on the device without having to pay for online services. It also eliminates the security risk to confidential data. AI models are generally becoming more resource-efficient, but 32 GB of RAM is currently the absolute minimum, while 64 GB would be a much better choice.
Although Asus equips the new ProArt P14 with the faster version of the Nvidia RTX Spark N1X, the device is currently only available with a maximum of 32 GB of RAM. The problem is that 16 GB is reserved for the graphics card by default, leaving just 16 GB for the system itself. While the amount allocated to the graphics card can be reduced to 4 GB, once Windows' memory requirements are also taken into account, only 15 to 20 GB remains for AI models. This currently places significant limits on what the laptop can do, and you already need a good understanding of AI models to be able to run them locally on this device at all.
Because of this limitation, the ProArt P14 currently makes only limited sense, even though it is a very good multimedia laptop overall. All further details are available in our in-depth review.
