Tesla’s new car registrations in Germany declined by 9.4% in September compared with the same month last year. According to data from the country’s road traffic authority, KBA, the American automaker recorded 3,404 new registrations during the month.
The drop comes despite continued growth in Germany’s wider electric vehicle market. KBA reported that overall battery-electric vehicle sales rose 31.9% year on year to 45,495 units in September. While Tesla’s numbers slowed, competing models, particularly from Chinese manufacturers, recorded stronger demand.
BYD, China’s largest EV maker, registered 3,255 new vehicles in September, more than twenty times its sales from a year earlier. BYD has sold 11,810 cars in Germany since January, narrowing the gap with Tesla’s year-to-date total.
Tesla’s total sales in Germany fell by 50.3% between January and September compared to last year. The EV company only sold 14,845 units this year within the first nine months.
However, the company has reported stronger performance in other European markets. The launch of the updated Model Y likely contributed to this growth trend.
On a more positive note, the company recently posted a teaser video on X announcing an October 7 event. The event will probably outline plans for more affordable electric vehicles to regain market momentum.
