Sub-$50,000 Model 3 Performance does sub-11 seconds quarter mile on public road as Tesla's new king of cheap speed
Tesla's underrated Model 3 Performance that can be had for just $47,490 with the federal tax credit can rival some of the most expensive sports cars.
A quarter mile run on a regular public road, which, needless to say, is illegal and very unsafe, ended in just 10.92 seconds. This is a fraction of a second slower than, say, a V12 Lamborghini Aventador SVJ.
The Aventador, however, costs ten times as much, and is not nearly as practical as Tesla's Model 3 Performance sedan for everyday driving, not to mention upkeep and insurance.
The Model 3 Performance also nailed a 0-60 mph acceleration in just 2.93 seconds, which is about what Tesla lists in the car's specs, with the slight difference that the run was not done on a track, and the A/C remained on.
Tesla is currently delivering the new Model 3 Performance orders in all trims and color combos, and its official sales also started in China, with deliveries set for June.
Hopefully, future Model 3 Performance owners won't need dangerous stunts like this to convince them about the market viability of Tesla's compact 510HP electric sedan.
