The Sony Vaio E-series VPC-EE2E1E/WI is one of the few laptops around that uses AMD's Vision 2010 platform. Basically this means that, instead of being based on Intel technology, it runs on an AMD Athlon processor and uses ATI Radeon graphics. For a budget laptop, the 15.5-inch Sony Vaio E-series VPC-EE2E1E/WI looks fantastic, but, sadly, its performance doesn't quite match its impressive design.

Sony's VAIO EE23FX/BI laptop may be affordable but it doesn't really set itself apart from the competition in terms of features, performance or price. Instead, the system really comes down to design and function. The keyboard is very well made and a joy to type on and the system runs very quiet with little in terms of heat. The downside is that the exterior case shows many fingerprints and the glittered palmrest looks like a child dropped some craft materials on it.

The VAIO VPCEE3E0E/WI is a mixed bag. Great build quality and usability can't disguise the slightly limited performance, while portability is hampered by the poor two and a half hour battery life.

Unlike most of the laptops we've reviewed recently, the Sony Vaio VPCEE3E0E/WI eschews Intel's chips in favour of AMD's processor and graphics technology. Our review model was supplied by Laptops Direct, where you can buy it for £495. not the fastest performer, but the 15.5-inch Sony Vaio VPCEE3E0E/WI is a stylish laptop with a good screen and keyboard.

Last summoning. When an Athlon is found in a laptop, it can only be an low-cost entry device. Find out in this review why it's still good enough for a "good" despite weak performance and poor TFT.

Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.
ATI Radeon HD 4250: Onboard graphics card (in the RS880M chipset) for AMD processors with Avivo HD support and technically a higher clocked HD 4200.
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5145: The 5145 is a renamed Mobility Radeon HD 4570 with slightly higher clock rates. Therefore it has no DirectX 11 support and a performance between the 4570 and 5470.
ATI Radeon HD 4200: Onboard graphics adapter (RS880M chipset) with UVD2 (PIP support) and DX 10.1 support (compared to the older HD 3200). Beware, possibly no 2D acelleration in Windows XP (as the HD3200).

With this weight, a laptop is rather heavier than average. Devices in this range shine more with screen size and performance than with mobility.
70.67%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
