The industrial-style Samsung Chronos 7 was introduced late September but is now available through online retailers.

The thin-and-light model, NP700Z3A-S01US, has a 14-inch display with 1600x900 pixel resolution and is 0.93-inches thick. Although not quite thin enough to be considered an ultrabook, it is under an inch nonetheless.

Internally, the 14-inch Chronos 7 houses an Intel Core i5-2430M, discrete Radeon HD 6490M graphics, 6GB RAM, and a dual 750GB HDD and 8GB SSD for faster wakeup times. The HDD and SSD combo is similar in function to the dual drive found in the Acer Aspire S3 ultrabook. Connectivity features include USB 3.0, USB 2.0, HDMI, card reader and Bluetooth. An optical drive is conspicuously missing. Overall, the 8-cell battery is listed for up to 9 hours of use.

The 14-inch notebook is currently selling on Amazon for $1100, but is unfortunately out of stock as of this writing. Large 15-inch and 15.6-inch Chronos 7 models are expected to be available in the near future.

After graduating with a B.S. in environmental hydrodynamics from the University of California, I studied reactor physics to become licensed by the U.S. NRC to operate nuclear reactors. There's a striking level of appreciation you gain for everyday consumer electronics after working with modern nuclear reactivity systems astonishingly powered by computers from the 80s.
