App is expected to be shown this week at the BlackBerry World 2011 conference, will be exclusive to the RIM PlayBook

Obsessive Facebook users rejoice – RIM this week has announced an official Facebook app exclusively for the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet.

So what exactly will the Facebook app do differently than just entering "facebook.com" onto a tablet’s browser? According to PCMag, the app will be optimized for multi-touch use on the 7-inch PlayBook. The ability to view comments and slide through pictures, upload media, and tag friends are expected to be more intuitive and fast on the BlackBerry tablet. Essentially, practically all desktop Facebook functions, including Facebook Chat, will be made easily accessible on the PlayBook.

The release of the app will mark the first official Facebook app available for any tablet. Of course, all tablets should be able to access Facebook directly through their respective browsers and through unofficial apps as well. While there are no announcements regarding an official Facebook app for iOS or Android, it wouldn’t be surprising if those plans are already in the works.

PCMag is predicting a demonstration of the Facebook app later this week at the BlackBerry World 2011 conference. The actual app is expected to be publically available sometime this May in the BlackBerry App World market.
