The official name for the latest version of Windows will be 'Windows 8' and it will come in three different variants

Microsoft has officially announced the name and details of its upcoming Windows operating system. Windows 8 will be the official name of the new OS and it will come in three different flavours.

Unlike the previous versions of Windows, there will be only two editions of Windows 8 for x86/64 based processorsWindows 8 and Windows 8 Pro. Windows 8 is for the regular consumer and will include all the basic features that are required in a PC. Windows 8 Pro is for the more serious and professional users. It includes all features from Windows 8 plus features for encryptionvirtualization, PC management, and domain connectivity.

As mentioned previously, Windows 8 will also be available for ARM devices. These devices will get Windows RT, presumably standing for ‘RunTime’, named after the programming model that stands behind the Metro-style apps. This edition will only be available pre-installed on PCs and tablets powered by ARM processors and "will include touch optimized desktop versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote software" according to Windows.
