Thanks to a multitude of mentionable OLED TV deals over the last couple of weeks, many budget-conscious shoppers have probably upgraded to a brand-new home theater screen. But since picture quality is just one side of the same coin, investing in a mid-range Dolby Atmos soundbar is usually worth the effort and money.
Television users who have realized exactly that and would like to upgrade to a decent soundbar for around $400 might want to take a look at the JBL Bar 500, which is a 5.1-channel system with a dedicated subwoofer and a total output power of 590 watts. This audio system usually retails for $599, but retailers like Amazon, Best Buy and Walmart have once again marked the JBL soundbar down to $399 including free shipping. According to Camelcamelcamel, this is the second-lowest Amazon price ever and comes within $50 of the all-time low price that was tracked during Black Friday 2025.
For more details on the JBL Bar 500, please refer to Rtings' in-depth review. This soundbar came out in 2023 and was praised for its powerful bass, clear dialogue and room correction feature. On the other side, this 5.1 speaker system does not have up-firing speakers, which means that Dolby Atmos audio tracks are sampled down and will not provide the immersive experience that more expensive systems offer. Furthermore, the Bar 500 doesn't allow adjusting the treble or bass. For just under $400, this JBL soundbar should still be a solid performer and a noteworthy bang-for-the-buck option for users who are currently using the flat and sometimes outright awful built-in TV speakers.
