Back in mid-July, we reported on an unexpected data failure for the Intel 320 Series of SSDs if in an event of a power failure. The result would cause a drive to read an incorrect maximum capacity, which effectively made the drive unusable. While Intel quickly acknowledged the problem, users have still been patiently waiting for the official fix. Fortunately, a firmware update is currently in the works and is to be released by September at the latest.
“The new firmware update is in final validation testing and is targeted for release on Intel Communities within the next two weeks,” said an Intel Spokeswoman. “Intel takes firmware updates and issues of reliability very seriously and is taking extra steps to support a smooth release.” The firmware is expected to be able to install without first reformatting the drive, but Intel suggests users to back up their data regardless.
Although great news for owners of a 320 Series SSD, those who were affected by the bug will still be a bit out of luck. The firmware update will not recover any loss data for crashed drives.
The Intel 320 Series was launched back in March with capacities up to 600GB. The drives offer up to 220MB/s write and 270MB/s read with their 3Gbps SATA interface.
