If you want a rugged notebook, and can’t afford the Toughbook yet – Gammatech has just given you another option in the form of the latest D12C convertible laptop. Do not go by its size – it’s got more punch than many can handle.

Look and feel

Well, the D12C will certainly not score in this department. It is bulky, with the boring grey and black shade and is nowhere near what you call a thin laptop. The 12.1-inch TFT screen is LED-backlit that can be swirled to place over the keyboard to make it a tablet. This WXGA display has a maximum resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels. There is also an option for making the screen readable under sun.

The screen border has a black shade that extends to the 86-key keyboard and the handle provided to carry the gadget. The touchpad and palm-rest part is grey with black mouse buttons. The 1.3MP webcam resides right on the top of the display panel towards middle.

Guts

Although the D12C will not take your breath away by its looks - what it has got is the ruggedness that should be able to take you through a tough day-out. An ultra low voltage dual-core Core i5-540UM processor does the duty underneath. It has a clock speed of 1.2GHz that can be increased to as much as 2GHz with the help of Turbo Boost technology. Both the cores are based on the Nehalem architecture. Accompanying it should be an Intel HM55 chipset and an integrated graphics controller that could have been replaced by a dedicated one to give the system that much graphical punch.

There are up to 8GB of RAM and a 2.5-inch SATA HDD along with an option of having an internal SSD for data backup.

I/O and connectivity

There are multiple I/O options available including a USB 2.0 port, SD card slot, mic and headphone outs, one Express card slot, Ethernet port, VGA port, e-SATA connector etc. Wireless connectivity will be taken care of by the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR. The 6-cell 5200mAah Li-ion battery promises just over 4 hours of battery life on one charge.

Safety and Security

The D12C concentrates most on its security and safety parts. All the I/O ports and dust resistant, and the laptop has been tested for various drop, shock, spill and dust protection standards. The battery has double protection to keep itself from getting damaged by caused by current or voltage surges and overheating.

There are BIOS administrator password protection and Fingerprint scanner for added security.

Pricing and availability

No words on the pricing and availability right now, but be prepared to pay a little premium for the rugged body.
