The price-performance elephant. A smartphone with Full HD, LTE, fingerprint scanner and metal casing for not quite 200 Euros (~$226)? That sounds too good to be true! But the Elephone P8000 features just that, and we will uncover whether there is a catch somewhere.

For the asking price the P8000 is an impressive amount of gadget. The MediaTek SoC provides ample power, the 5.5-inch IPS screen is easy on the eye if potentially fragile, the cameras are both perfectly serviceable, both SIM slots support 4G service, and there’s a microSD card slot to back up the built-in 16GB of storage.

So there you have it for this in-depth look at the Elephone P8000! As impressive as this device looks on paper, there are a lot of issues that show up when it comes to real world performance. While the battery life is amazing, and the display, other than some quality control issues, is excellent, there are some glaring flaws that are hard to overlook. It’s a definite no go if you are in the US unless they can fix its network connectivity issues, but may still be a good option in other markets however, especially if you’re looking for an affordable device with excellent battery life.

In the past there have always been a few niggles that have held me back from wholeheartedly recommending Elephone's products. However, the P9000 manages to get pretty much everything right, with the possible exception of its inconsistent fingerprint scanner and unfinished camera software.

We’re very impressed with the Elephone P9000, which is a great all-round Android phone at an unbelievable sub-£200 price. It’s fast, battery life is good, it’s feature-packed and it even runs Marshmallow. Wireless- and quick-charging-, NFC-, USB-C-, dual-SIM- and microSD support are the icing on the cake. Recommended.

A similar performer to the UK’s best budget phone, the Moto G5, but with enhanced cameras and more storage, the Elephone P8 Mini is a great buy if you’re happy to import it from China.

Elephone:
The smartphone manufacturer ELEPHONE Communication Technology Co. Ltd. was founded in China in 2006. The sales numbers are limited and so are the number of reviews. The ratings are average (as of 2016).
These graphics cards are not suited for Windows 3D games. Office and Internet surfing however is possible.
ARM Mali-T720 MP4: Integrated graphics card with four clusters clocked at up to 600 MHz. The chip supports OpenGL ES 3.1 and is typically produced in 28nm.
Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.
ARM Mali-T860 MP2: Dual-Core version of the Mali-T860 graphics card from ARM for mostly Android based smartphones and tablets. E.g. in the Mediatek Helio P10 clocked at 700 MHz and produced in 28nm.
Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.
ARM Mali-T880 MP12: Mobile graphics solution for tablets and smartphones, which can be found in ARM SoCs like the Samsung Exynos 8890 with 650 MHz.
ARM Mali-G71 MP2: Integrated GPU that can be found e.g. in the Mediatek Helio P23 SoC with 700 or 770 MHz clock speed. Supports OpenGL ES 3.2, Vulkan 1.0, OpenCL 2.0, DirectX 11 FL11_1 and RenderScript.

5.00:
It is a very small display format for smartphones. You should by no means be mis-sighted and you will generally see very little on the screen and only have a small resolution available. In return, the device should be very small and handy.
» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.

78.5%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
