Xiaomi's newest speaker features a minimalist metal enclosure that measures 14.3 × 7.8 × 5.3 inches and weighs around 18 lbs. Xiaomi also puts four drivers into the sleek housing. Specifically, two 4-inch woofers, each combined with a 30-watt amplifier, as well as a midrange driver and a tweeter, which are part of a coaxial driver powered by a 30-watt and a 10-watt amplifier.
With this setup, Xiaomi wants to reproduce frequencies from 47Hz to 22kHz and offer a maximum volume of 101dB. It’s possible to combine two Xiaomi Sound 2 Max units into a wireless stereo pair, or even connect four speakers in order to create a surround sound setup. That said, Xiaomi does not offer the option to expand the system with a dedicated subwoofer. Buttons on the top allow control of playback and volume.
Music can be transmitted to the Xiaomi Sound 2 Max wired via RCA or USB-C, or wirelessly via Bluetooth 5.2 and WiFi 6. However, Xiaomi’s new speaker only supports a proprietary transmission standard, so Apple AirPlay or Google Cast are not an option. The corresponding smartphone app can be used to customize the sound using an equalizer. Meanwhile, built-in microphones can be used for an AI voice assistant.
