The Toshiba Satellite P745-S4217 is fine on the plug if you want to use it for serving up Blu-ray movies, definitely one of the best uses for this machine. Just because it doesn't game—or chug along on battery—as well as our Asus U41JF-A1 Editors' Choice, doesn't mean it's not worthy of your attention if you want a portable system that you can be assured will do a variety of things well.

Underneath the seemingly predictable veneer of the 14-inch Toshiba Satellite P745D-S4240 are two new stories, albeit ones that might not interest the average person much. The budget-priced Toshiba Satellite P745D-S4240 will save you some money thanks to its AMD A6 processor, with a dip in speed in exchange for some better-than-average graphics.

The Toshiba Satellite P745-S4320 is a solid laptop with a full feature set. But the Sony VAIO VPC-EG27FM/W will provide all but a USB 3.0 port, and makes up for it in battery life (8:48) and price ($90 less than the P745-S4320). If you have no real use for features like Blu-ray, USB 3.0, WiMAX, and WiDi 2.0, the Editors' Choice Dell Inspiron 14z (Core i5) might be the better option over the P745-S4320.

14.00:
14 inch display size represents a middle ground between the small subnotebook formats and the screens of the standard 15 inch laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact.
In the past, 14-inch devices were very rare, but now they are the standard for laptops after the 15-inchers.

66.67%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
