Quad-core for the masses. We could not help but remain unimpressed by AMD's Trinity dual-core CPUs. But what about the Kabini quad-cores? And how much of a "real laptop" can be found in Toshiba's low-cost offering? Does the mainstream device exhibit unexpected strengths?

Put simply, the Satellite is not a high-end laptop. It isn't marketed as one, and it doesn't pretend to be. So it shouldn't come as much of a surprise that it doesn't include every feature and doesn't perform on par with the more upscale models we've reviewed in the past (including many from Toshiba).

The Toshiba Satellite C55D-B5244 is a competent desktop-replacement laptop for a nice price, but drawbacks, like a non-removable battery and a somewhat flimsy keyboard, keep it in the middle of the pack. Even features like 6GB of system memory and a 750GB hard drive can't elevate the system much higher. The Dell Inspiron 17 5000 Series remains our top pick, thanks to its large 1,600-by-900-resolution screen, removable battery, more expensive feel and build quality, all for a list price that's $20 less than the Toshiba model.

Slimmed down. Toshiba is charging about 410 Euros (~$485) for their Satellite C50D-B-125, a simple office computer that runs on an AMD APU. Is the computer worth the cash, when comparable Bay Trail notebooks are available at considerably lower prices?

67.5%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
