Tesla changes windshield wiper speed controls for the better

Tesla's unfortunate autowiper function could be fixed with a rain sensor, but until its Vision-only solution pans out, it keeps adjusting the ways around its main problem with the windshield wipers.

The newest Tesla 2024.14.3 software update brings a plethora of new functions and visual interface changes, as usual, but the universally acclaimed addition would likely be the next change in wiper controls.

The functioning of the automatic windshield wipers on Tesla cars has traditionally been one of their weak point and a major source of frustration with owning a Tesla.

The beleaguered driver often finds them working vigorously on a bright, sunny day because a bug smashed, and the camera read the splatter as a raindrop.

Alternatively, Tesla's wipers could be working in a leisurely manner or not react at all while the skies are pouring all of their contents on the windshield.

To somewhat remedy at least the erratic wiper speeds, Tesla introduced physical means of control in case the autowiper function doesn't work as intended.

The Tesla 2023.20 update, for instance, finally brought wiper controls to the steering wheel via the left scroll wheel. This was still a rather clumsy solution, since Tesla assigned the oft neglected tilt function of the wheel to control wiper speed with a less than ergonomic movement.

In the newest 2024.14.3 update, however, Tesla gives up on the tilting motion, and now the driver can control wiper speeds with the more logical up or down scroll of the wheel. Alternatively, one can go through the four Tesla wiper speed settings with a pressing of the control button.

"When you press the wipers button to view wiper controls, you can now adjust wiper speed by moving the left scroll wheel up or down," tips Tesla in the update changelog, and adds that "when you have the wipers set to I, II, III, or IIII, you can press the wipers button to cycle through speeds."

These are all welcome changes while people wait on a real autowiper solution from Tesla. Hopefully, this small change in scroll wheel controls is not what Tesla meant when it said that a fix will "go out soon" for automatic wipers' behavior in Autopilot mode.
