The Tesla Cybertruck was the subject of a road test by Youtuber Dennis Wang, who was surprised by the truck's unexpectedly poor efficiency. Along with a few other shortcomings revealed during the drive, there was also plenty of praise for the futuristic e-pickup.

The Tesla Cybertruck was unveiled at the end of last year, and not many people have owned the futuristic e-pickup since. Many observers are now eagerly awaiting the new owners' first experiences with the vehicle, and reports are starting to trickle in. Youtuber Dennis Wang went on an extensive road trip with his friend on his very first road trip in the Cybertruck. During the journey, the Youtuber was unexpectedly surprised by poor efficiency and other shortcomings. But Dennis Wang, who has driven all four other Tesla models, also praised some of its features:

It's the most comfortable Tesla I've ever driven, but it definitely lacked range in terms of efficiency, and we had to stop a lot along the way.

The plan was to drive from Austin, Texas, to Joshua Tree National Park in California. The tour, which began at 8 p.m., was scheduled to end at 7:24 p.m. the next day at the destination entered in the onboard computer - including all the necessary charging stops. However, the journey actually took 27 hours. Dennis Wang documented the entire journey, which started with a battery charge of 85%. The Youtuber also stated that he tended to charge the vehicle between 10-30% and up to 70-80%.

12 charging stops over 1,340 miles

At the first charging stop in Junction, Texas, the vehicle was 26% charged and according to the onboard computer, 25 minutes of recharge time should be enough to reach about 85%, which was about right. The next stop in Ozona, Texas, takes about an hour and 11 minutes at about 78 mph, and the pickup arrives with only 33% charge. At this station, a slightly slower 150 kW supercharger, the electric truck has to be recharged for a good 40 minutes before the battery is 77% and the trip can continue.

According to the onboard computer, it should take one hour and 44 minutes to reach the third stop in Fort Stockton, Texas, where the truck should arrive with a 13% charge after 121 miles. But the driver manages to arrive with only seven per cent charge - at least at a 250 kW supercharger. And so the journey continues from charging station to charging station until the two friends have covered a distance of 1,340 miles after a total of 12 charging stops and 27 hours.

As the Cybertruck was repeatedly inspected by interested passers-by, which Wang took the time to do, he deducted two hours for this - leaving a total time of 25 hours. Without the many stops for recharging, the ride would probably have taken only 20 hours. After a few more test trips, Wang added that the range had improved after driving in the more temperate Californian climate instead of colder Texas and closing the tonneau cover.

Other points of criticism and praise

Another drawback besides the low efficiency is the lack of comfort when charging. Because the car is so long, the charging cable barely reaches the truck - it just about does, but you have to drive very close to the charging station, right up to the parking stop. Even then, you have to pull the cable with some force and have no room to manoeuvre.

The many passers-by who tried to touch the car also noticed that the pickup is a fingerprint magnet. Finally, Wang criticised the fact that the infotainment screen went black after about 12 hours of driving and he had to rely on the Tesla app to control the car until he turned the car off for several hours at his destination and the screen worked again. However, he praised the very pleasant steering, the fluidity of the screen, the large dashboard, the LED interior lighting, the spacious interior, the excellent backup camera and the driving experience:

It's a fantastic truck. The interior and build quality are definitely one of Tesla's best. It makes me really excited for what future Teslas will look like.
