If you enjoyed the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series and feel like heading back to Chernobyl, Chernobylite could be right up your alley. Released by The Farm 51 in 2021, it blends multiple genres and puts a stronger focus on management and role-playing than S.T.A.L.K.E.R. ever did.
The story centers on physicist Igor Khymynuk, who returns to the radioactive zone decades after the nuclear disaster to search for his missing fiancée, Tatyana. As he digs deeper, he uncovers dark secrets surrounding a mysterious substance called Chernobylite, which triggers supernatural events. The narrative is non-linear – your choices influence how the story unfolds and can even reshape the past, as Igor’s death transports him into alternate timelines.
From a first-person perspective, players explore Chernobyl in search of resources, crafting materials and weapons. Threats come not only from armed soldiers guarding the Exclusion Zone, but also from mutants and unsettling paranormal forces. Igor can expand and upgrade his base with workbenches, medical stations and other essential facilities for survival and mission planning. Each in-game day brings important decisions – you choose missions, send out allies or venture out yourself, with every choice having real consequences. Missions can fail, and NPCs may die for good.
If you're looking for top-notch shooter mechanics, Chernobylite might not hit the mark. In their German review, PCGames pointed out issues with imprecise ballistics and unreliable enemy AI. However, the game stands out with its atmospheric Chernobyl setting and unique genre mix. On Steam, it has around 15,000 user reviews, 82% of which are positive. On Metacritic, it holds a Metascore of 75 and a User Score of 7.7. It's also rated as 'Playable' on the Steam Deck (which currently goes for about $440 on Amazon).
80% discount on Steam
Chernobylite normally sells for $30 on Steam, but until September 29, it's available at a steep 80% discount – bringing it back down to its all-time lowest price of $6, according to SteamDB.
