CES 2013 | Samsung announces 8-core Exynos 5 Octa processor

Teaser
More cores = better performance? The South Korean manufacturer is betting big on quantity for its upcoming 8-core Exynos mobile processor based on both the Cortex-A15 and Cortex-A7 architectures.

The quad-core "4-plus-1" Tegra 4 kicked off CES yesterday with a number of surprises and the new Snapdragon series should prove to be a breath of fresh air for Qualcomm. Samsung, however, is most definitely not just sitting back and watching the show.

At their 2013 CES keynote address, Samsung unveiled its latest iteration in their successful Exynos family of SoCs, called the Exynos 5 Octa. As its name suggests, Exynos 5 Octa is an 8-core processor made up of dual asymmetric quad-core modules. The first quad-core module consists of high-performance processors based on the new Cortex-A15 architecture while the second quad-core module consists of lower-performance processors based on the older Cortex-A7 design. Similar to the Tegra 3 and Tegra 4, the high-performance cores kick into action during demanding loads while the more power efficient lower-performance cores will take over less demanding tasks. According to the press release, overall energy efficiency will be up 70 percent compared to the current crop of quad-core Exynos SoCs.

Unfortunately, Samsung has yet to state a solid release date and what upcoming tablets and smartphones will sport the new Exynos 5 Octa. Even so, the South Korean manufacturer has certainly outdone the competition in terms of overall core count.
