A budget Blu-ray laptop but it still packs a nicely powerful specification. Samsung was one of the first laptop manufacturers to put a Blu-ray drive in a more competitively priced laptop, and while the R780 isn't what you'd call budget, it is highly affordable and offers fantastic value for money. Despite its shortcomings, the R780 offers great value for money. While the Blu-ray playback is much better quality than DVD, it still falls behind the stiff competition.

Samsung hits all the right spots with the R780. This 17-inch machine has great graphics muscle for a low price while delivering luxury laptop looks. At the list price of $929 it’s a decent choice, but for the Best Buy price of $799 the R780 is a steal. While the $849 Gateway NV7901u edges out this system in some areas—particularly battery life—it doesn’t match the R780’s superior design.

The R780 is the largest and highest performance of Samsung laptops. Samsung highlights its combination of technology with an original design. Comfortable to use, quiet and with a nice design, the Samsung R780 is worth a look. Good overall performance however, its screen and the audio leave something to be desired, which almost cost it another star on our rating.

With decent processing power, the ability to let you indulge in a bit of gaming and a solid design, the R780 is great value at £799. However, Samsung's curious decision to go with a 32-bit operating system and the laptop's woefully short battery life can't be ignored. Some folk won't be too concerned about either, though, and this is otherwise a very impressive laptop at an equally impressive price.

Samsung's R780 is a budget desktop replacement laptop that offers good performance and is solidly engineered. The NP-R780-JSIBUK version we reviewed offers good value for money. It's bundled with excellent specifications, but battery life is criminally low and it lacks a full HD screen. There are a couple of configurations to choose from, but you can't upgrade the screen to a higher resolution. However, the R780 remains a commendable, if not exceptional, budget desktop replacement as long as you don't expect to stay away from a power socket for too long.

Samsung has once again captured a powerful mixture of performance and value in the R780. Its Blu-ray drive might be wasted on the sub-Full HD display and rotten speakers, but for general computing tasks its shines and delivers decent gaming performance to boot.

Considering that the Samsung R780 hits that magical sub-$1000 price point, I’d say that it offers a fair bit of value for money. You get a large 17.3-inch LED HD+ display with great vibrant colors and a decent 1600×900 pixel resolution. I would have liked true 1080p and a Blu-ray player, but those may have bumped the price into four figures.

When we reviewed the Samsung R730, we were impressed by its £500 price tag and stylish red lid. But we were disappointed by its lack of power and the fact that the lovely red finish didn't extend to the laptop's interior. The Samsung R780 offers good performance for the price, and both the chassis and display look great. If you can forgive its weak battery life, it'll prove an ace multimedia machine.

Looks good, works well and doesn't cost a packet - what's not to like? Well, apart from the disappointing sound and below par Blu-ray playback, not much. For the most part, though, this is a stylish machine which delivers good results.

Samsung: The Samsung Group is composed of numerous international businesses, all united under the Samsung brand in South Korea. The meaning of the Korean word Samsung is "tristar" or "three stars". The Samsung brand is one of the most important brands of South Korea. Samsung is an international notebook manufacturer of medium size according market shares and reviews.
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.
NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M: The Nvidia GeForce GT 330M is the successor of the GT 230M and technically just a slightly higher clocked GT 240M (but it should still maintain the power envelope of the GT 230M as the naming suggests).

Intel Core i5:
520M:
The Core i5-520M has only 3 MB L3 Cache (compared to the I7-640M) and clocks between 2.4-2.93 GHz (Turbo Mode). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD 3150) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.
430M:
The Core i5-430M is a middle class dual core CPU that features only 3 MB L3 Cache (compared to the I7-640M) and clocks between 2.26-2.53 GHz (Turbo Mode). Furthermore, VT-d, trusted Execution and AES features are missing in the 430M. Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (Intel HD Graphics with 500-733 MHz) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.
17.3: Meanwhile the 17 inch display size is a more frequently offered standard format for desktop-replacements. The DTR-laptops can't be carried easily, need much energy but on the other side texts can be read easily and high resolutions are no problem. DTR mainly are intended for stationary usage on desks, where the weight and the energy need are unimportant.

2.8 kg:
This weight is average for notebooks. Therefore the numerous mass of laptops with 15 inch display fits in this class of weight.
3 kg:
79.38%: This rating is not convincing. The laptop is evaluated below average, this is not really a recommendation for purchase.
