The Samsung R530 laptop is affordable. As such, it’s no metal-clad Apple MacBook Pro  beater, but then again it doesn’t try to be. It’s well designed, well made and has a price tag of around £500. If you’re in the market for such a machine you should stick the Samsung R530 on your shopping list. A great all-rounder at an impressive price. Could be more compact though.

For the money the Samsung R530 is a decent laptop, and benefits from a particularly good screen. Its large hard drive is also a plus point, but a little more attention to detail in the design is required.

The 17.3-inch Samsung R780 recently charmed our socks off. The R530 is that laptop's smaller cousin, sporting the same distinctive red lid, but with a 15.6-inch display and some less powerful hardware inside. The 15.6-inch Samsung R530 offers a good design and build quality but other laptops offer better performance for a similar price. Unless you're ultra-keen on the design, we'd advise shopping around before splashing out.

Overall, the Samsung R530-Red is a fairly typical budget class system that doesn't really have any features that make it stand out from similarly priced laptops. In fact, it uses an older Core 2 Duo processor rather than the newer Core i3 that puts it at a disadvantage performance wise. The keyboard is one bright spot on this colorful laptop although the trackpad needs some work.

A great looking laptop which offers substance as well style. Not only is the Samsung R530 a great looking laptop, it also boasts great usability, performance and portability - and all at a very competitive price. If that wasn't enough, there's also decent portability chucked in for good measure, making this machine a good choice indeed.

It used to be that if you wanted to do anything of any value on a computer you needed a desktop PC because laptops were not powerful enough. Nowadays, full-sized laptops such as the Samsung R530 are a good alternative to the bulk of a desktop computer. A good choice if you are willing to swap netbook portability for better performance.

With its R530 range, Samsung offers the bare minimum required in a decent laptop, which in turn allows it to reach some fairly aggressive price points while maintaining good ergonomics. Unfortunately for the Core 2 Duo-based JA03UK model under review, it's not the best value option in the range and doesn't compare favourably to some competing offerings either.

Samsung: Samsung Group is the largest South Korean conglomerate and was founded in 1938. Samsung Group employed 489,000 people in 2014 and is one of the world's largest companies in terms of revenue and market strength. The name Samsung means "Three Stars" in Korean and represents the three sons of the company's founder. The company was founded in 1938 as a grocery store. With its subsidiary Samsung Electronics, founded in 1969, Samsung took up the production of electrotechnical items, focusing on consumer electronics and household appliances at an early stage. Other branches in which the large corporation is active include mechanical engineering, automobiles (Hyundai), insurance, wholesale, real estate and leisure. Samsung manufactures a wide range of electronic products, including smartphones, televisions, home appliances and semiconductors. The company's Galaxy line of smartphones is one of the most popular in the world. Samsung is also a major player in the semiconductor industry, making memory chips and processors for many other electronics manufacturers.

Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500M: The graphics core of the Intel GL40 and GS40 chipset features a slower clocked GMA 4500MHD (400 versus 533 MHz). Because of the slower core speed, full Blu-Ray Logo support is not given and the gaming performance is a bit worse.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD: Onboard (shared Memory) GPU built in the GM45, GE45 and GS45 chipset (Montevina). Because of two more shaders and a higher core clock, much faster than the old GMA X3100. Still not advisable for gamers (DirectX 10 games not playable or only with very low settings). The integrated video processor is able to help decode HD videos (AVC/VC-2/MPEG2) , e.g., for a fluent Blu-Ray playback with slow CPUs.

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.

Intel Pentium Dual Core: The return of the name Pentium, though it is a Yonah core. In fact, it is a double Core processor with a very good relation of performance to current consumption.

T4400:

Entry to middle class dual core CPU with 1 MB level 2 cache and no virtualization technology. Compared to the Core 2 Duo line, some power saving mechanism are deactivated.

T4500:

Entry to middle class dual core CPU with 1 MB level 2 cache and no virtualization technology. Compared to the Core 2 Duo line, some power saving mechanism are deactivated.

Intel Core 2 Duo: This is the Core Duo and Core Solo successor with a longer pipeline and 5-20% more speed without more power consumption. As an addition to the Core Duo design there exists a fourth decoder, an amplified SSE-unit and an additional arithmetical logical unit (ALU).

The Core 2 Duo for laptops is identical to the desktop Core 2 Duo processors but the notebook-processors work with lower voltages (0.95 to 1188 Volt) and a lower Frontside bus clock (1066 vs 667 MHz). The performance of equally clocked notebooks is 20-25% lower than Desktop PCs because of the lower Frontside bus clock and the slower hard disks.

T6600: Entry level Core 2 Duo dual core processor with a small 2MB level 2 cache and without virtualization functions.

Intel Celeron Dual-Core: The Intel Celeron Dual-Core familiy consists out of dual core CPUs for cheap laptops. Compared to the Celeron M single core family the biggest advantage (in addition to the second core) is the Enhanced Speedstep function, which enables the notebook to downclock the CPU in Idle mode. Therefore, the current consumption can be much lower. Compared to the Core (2) Duo or Pentium Dual-Core processors, the Celeron Cual-Core features much less L2 Cache which leads to a lower performance per clock.

T3100: Slow clocked entry level dual core CPU with 64 Bit functions enabled. As the T3100 lacks Speedstep and other power saving functions, the power consumption is higher than of a similar clocked Core 2 Duo / Pentium.

76.09%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
