While Ubisoft seems to have lost its way as of late, the company was firing on all cylinders a decade ago in 2014. Releasing games like Watch Dogs, Rayman Legends, and Assassin’s Creed Unity, 2014 was a pretty good year for Ubisoft. It was also the year when Ubisoft released Far Cry 4. Set in the magical mountains and valleys of the Himalayas, Far Cry 4 is, to some, the best Far Cry game in the series.
So, if you are a Far Cry fan who has been betrayed by the lackluster Far Cry 6, Far Cry 4 is an incredible palate cleanser. Better yet, if you’ve never played any Far Cry game before, Far Cry 4 is an excellent introduction to the series.
Ubisoft is currently running a big Steam sale on the entire Far Cry franchise, including Far Cry 4. The game is currently only $5.99, a massive 80% price cut.
Far Cry 4 boasts a breathtaking open world
The three main draws of every Far Cry game are the open world setting, the main story, and the action-packed gameplay. Far Cry 4 generally nails all three.
Set in the Himalayan country of Kyrat, Far Cry 4 has an open world filled with beautiful landscapes. IGN called the setting “one of the best-realized locations” in any video game in their original 2014 review of the game. From searching for ancient treasure and hunting animals for their skin to make wallets, Far Cry 4 gives you plenty of reasons to explore the vast open world.
Moving on to the story, the protagonist, Ajay Ghale, finds himself in the midst of a civil war between the revolutionary faction “The Golden Path” and the government of King Pagan Min. The story and Ajay’s familial connection to the revolutionaries become clearer as players progress through the main campaign.
Like virtually all Far Cry titles, the main story missions often revolve around clearing outposts, attacking strongholds, and assassinating high-ranking targets. Going in guns blazing, sneaking around outposts without alerting enemies, or using animals like elephants for help, Far Cry 4 gives players a lot of freedom in how they tackle each mission. It is this flexibility of combat that makes the game fun to play, either alone or with a friend in the co-op mode.
Far Cry 4 also has plenty of other activities to do, including side missions, which also grant XP like the main missions. Players can use the accumulated XP to unlock new skills. There are also the magical Shangri-La missions that transport you to a mythical location where you fight demons alongside a Sky Tiger.
Finally, Far Cry 4 also has a competitive multiplayer mode, which is still active to this day. Provided you can find other players online, you can engage in PvP battles in three different modes.
Far Cry 4 system requirements
Far Cry 4 is quite easy to run by today’s standards. The “Recommended” system requirements on Steam mandate:

- 8 GB of RAM
- A GeForce GTX 680 or Radeon R9 290X or better
