Lumion has been the quintessential rendering software used by university students and professional architects to visualize buildings and interiors etc. We are finally at version 12 and the developers of Lumion have decided to add Ray Tracing support for GPUs.

Lumion was first released in 2010 by Act-3D and since then 12 versions have come along. In Lumion version 12, GPU accelerated ray tracing rendering effects were officially introduced. Unlike some developers, the people over at Lumion were kind enough to support not just Nvidia RTX but Radeon Raytracing as well.

In order to utilize GPU accelerated ray tracing in Lumion 12, you must have an RTX 20 series GPU if you are using Nvidia or an RX 6000 series GPU if you are using Radeon. GPUs prior to those generations can only use rasterization. Unfortunately, Lumion 12 still doesn’t support Intel Arc GPUs. If you would like to use Lumion 12 to its fullest, you would need to skip Intel Arc GPUs for now.

From the software requirement side of things, it is recommended to have driver version 528.49 for Nvidia GPUs and version 23.2.1 for Radeon GPUs. To complement the new addition of ray tracing into Lumion 12, the materials library has been expanded with an additional 98 new materials.

The way Lumion 12 handles reflections have also been overhauled. You can now have accurate reflections from curved surfaces and soft shadows look evermore realistic. All of these new features are plus points for students and architects who are looking to enhance the realism of their ideas.
