Lenovo ThinkPad P72 Series
The Lenovo ThinkPad P72 is the successor to the P71. It is a powerhouse aimed at power users who do not care much for ultimate thinness, because they have special requirements, such as a huge amount of storage or even more performance. The P72 is offering hexacore Intel Core or Xeon processors, up to 128 GB of DDR4 memory, up to 6 TB of storage space with RAID 0 or 1 support, as well as a 16GB Optane Memory caching SSD for an additional speed bump. With a six-core processor and 9 TFLOPS of graphics under the hood, the ThinkPad P72 can be considered an “every duty notebook”, as it has enough horsepower for almost any task. As for the GPUs, the P72 will be offered with various options, including the Nvidia Quadro P600, P2000, P3200, P4200 and the Nvidia Quadro P5200. The Lenovo ThinkPad P72 workstation features a 17.3-inch display with both Full HD and 4K UHD options, the latter boasting 100 per cent Adobe colour gamut with 10-bit colour depth and 400nit brightness. The P72 is pretty heavy though, at 7.5 pounds, and it is a full inch thick. When it comes to the chassis and overall aesthetic design, the always conservative Lenovo has put together a new chassis that generally tries to sustain their classic ThinkPad look. To that end, the latest ThinkPad P72 generally resembles its predecessor, the ThinkPad P71. Notably, Lenovo ditched the DVD drive and opted for a thinner chassis instead. The ThinkPad P72 is 25.9 to 31 mm thick, compared with 29.9 to 34.2 mm for the P71. The DVD drive is not the only feature that was axed.
The ThinkPad P72 also drops the mechanical proprietary bottom docking port, instead opting for the same Thunderbolt 3 based dock that was announced alongside the smaller ThinkPad P52. Joining the beastly hardware are a variety of ports, including a pair of Thunderbolt 3 ports, USB-A, HDMI 2.0, Gigabit Ethernet, Mini Display 1.4, a smart card reader, a combo audio jack, and a 4-in-1 SD-card reader. Wireless connectivity includes Bluetooth 5.0 and 802.11a/c+. The ThinkPad P72 is has an Energy Star 6.1 rating, among other green certifications, and there are ISV certifications for SolidWorks, Vectorworks, AutoCAD, Maya, and similar software. Lenovo offers a Workstation Dock as an optional accessory, as well as a Passage Backpack that can handle the model’s hefty 7.5 lbs of weight. Buyers are given multiple operating system choices, with Windows 10 and 10 Pro for Workstations both being offered, as well as preloaded Ubuntu and certified Redhat Linux. The P72 also boasts multiple security options, including dTPM 2.0, a touch fingerprint reader, and a Kensington-Lock Slot.

Before we get to draw any conclusions you have to understand that this laptop is not for everyone. It’s a 17-inch workstation, thus bulky, heavy and expensive, but at the same time highly configurable, built to last and deliver solid performance in taxing chores. If you’re not primarily looking for such a device that can benefit from the powerful CPUs, Quadro GPUs, multiple storage and extra RAM, you’ll most likely find better value with other types of products.

You could also spring for the 15-inch ThinkPad P1 ($3,209) and save almost $2,000. It actually has a stronger overall performance (Xeon E-2176M CPU, 32GB of RAM), a faster SSD and a more vivid 4K panel than the ThinkPad P72. However, you'd be losing out on some graphics performance, as it has a Quadro P2000 GPU. If you want top-notch graphics performance, the ThinkPad P72 is a solid option, but it's not our top workstation pick for this size display.

All things considered, the Lenovo ThinkPad P72 is a great mobile workstation with a lot of power, and that's why I gave it an 8.5. Sure, it's thick, heavy, and it gets terrible battery life, but those are the sacrifices you can expect to make in the name of power, which is presumably what you want if you're even reading this review.

Lenovo: Lenovo ("Le" from English legend, novo (Latin) for new) was founded in 1984 as a Chinese computer trading company. As of 2004, the company was the largest laptop manufacturer in China and, after acquiring IBM's PC division in 2005, the fourth largest in the world. In addition to desktops and notebooks, the company manufactures monitors, projectors, servers, etc, and specializes in developing, manufacturing and marketing consumer electronics, personal computers, software, enterprise solutions and related services.
In 2016, the company ranked first in the world in computer sales. It still held it in 2023 with about 23% global market share. Important product lines are Thinkpad, Legion and Ideapad.
In 2011, it acquired a majority stake in Medion AG, a European computer hardware manufacturer. In 2014, Motorola Mobility was purchased, which gave Lenovo a boost in the smartphone market.
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.
NVIDIA Quadro P2000: Mid-range workstation graphics card based on the 14nm GP107 chip (similar to the consumer GTX 1050 Ti) from the Pascal architecture. The Quadro GPUs offer certified drivers, which are optimized for stability and performance in professional applications (CAD, DCC, medical, prospection, and visualizing applications).
With these GPUs you are able to play modern and demanding games fluently at medium detail settings and HD resolution.
NVIDIA Quadro P5200: High-end workstation graphics card for laptops that is based on the 16 nm GP104 chip (Pascal). Similar to the desktop GTX 1080 but with GDDR5 memory. An efficient but slower Max-Q variant is also available.

3.4 kg:
A laptop with this weight is comparatively heavy and less designed for mobility than for use at the desk. Therefore, the devices tend to shine less with battery life than with a large screen and higher performance.

75%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
