Rumors have been circulating for months that Leica is developing a variant of the Leica M11 with an electronic viewfinder. According to the latest information from LeicaRumors, the camera is expected to be officially unveiled in October. While the final product name has not yet been announced, the camera may be marketed under the name Leica M11-V.
Rumors suggest that the camera is based on the Leica M11-P, but with two major differences. First, the dedicated ISO dial will be omitted, presumably to make room for the second innovation: the electronic viewfinder. Leica plans to replace the eponymous rangefinder with an EVF. Until now, the electronic viewfinder had to be retrofitted if needed, as Leica offers a clip-on EVF for the M11 series in the form of the Visoflex 2. As this occupies the hot shoe, the EVF and flashes cannot be used at the same time.
Switching from a rangefinder to an electronic viewfinder should make the camera more affordable while allowing Leica to circumvent the limitations of the rangefinder, such as the minimum focusing distance of 70 centimeters. Like the Leica M11-D, which dispenses with a display altogether, the Leica M with electronic viewfinder is intended to be merely another option for customers; future models such as the Leica M12 will continue to have a rangefinder. According to LeicaRumors, the Leica M12 will not be launched until the end of 2026 at the earliest. Moreover, the Leica M11-V is expected adopt the features of the Leica M11-P, including a 60-MP full-frame sensor, 256 GB of internal storage and a 2.95-inch touchscreen with a sapphire crystal cover.
