Glitz and Glamour. HP promises "chic design and high end entertainment" with the HDX16. In fact you're dazzled by all of the high gloss and chrome surfaces when opening the laptop. The reflective 16-inch display with full HD resolution, as well the touchpad, which could also have been a makeup mirror, contribute their parts equally. Equipped with a broad range of interfaces as well as solid hardware components (Core 2 Duo CPU, 9600M GT graphics) the laptop leaves little to be desired when it comes to multimedia.

HP HDX X16-1040 gets our attention with impressive HD screen, TV and Blu-Ray The past several months have seen a slew of laptops arrive in the PC Authority Labs with home entertainment ambitions. Sony's VAIO VGN-FZ38GU and Acer's Aspire 8920G (web ID: 120144) have tried to combine TV tuners, Blu-ray drives and fancy gimmicks to convince punters that their desktop replacement is the best option. Add in the TV tuner, respectable performance and relatively low cost - $2099 is more expensive than the Qosmio, but less than the Acer Aspire and Sony VAIO - and HP can rightfully claim this as the best-value entertainment laptop around.

HP's HDX 16-1140us is essentially a slightly upgraded version of their previous HDX 16-1040us model. This includes a slightly faster processor and larger hard drive. Beyond this, the system is nearly identical with the same large number of peripheral ports and highly reflective LCD panel that can be quite annoying in some lighting conditions. The problem really is that many systems have caught up to HP's features and price.

A semi-portable multimedia laptop offering style, power and features. The HDX range is HP's premium consumer brand, and provides stylish, high-quality multimedia machines. The HDX16-1010EA (£978 inc. VAT) is a 16-inch laptop that combines power, usability and features in a semi-portable package. The design is by far the most striking feature, with a combination of high-gloss chrome-effect materials and patterned shiny plastics. We found it to be one of the most attractive machines in a while. The 16-inch screen is every bit as good as its rivals, matching the Samsung for sharpness. Watching films on it was a pleasure. Colours are reproduced in stunning clarity. Overall, the HDX16 is a deeply impressive laptop. Offering the full power of the larger machines, it features a screen that's every bit as good, wrapped in a stylish and high-quality chassis.

That's the crux of the situation for the HP, beyond what is an amazing screen it offers little above what is to be found on other similar priced systems. But if shove comes to push, we'd happily opt for the screen.

If you’re after a multimedia laptop but want something a little smaller than Toshiba’s Qosmio or the Sony VAIO AW, then the HDX16 is well worth a look, not least because of the style, comfort and features on offer. We were also deeply impressed by the pin-sharp screen and useful everyday performance. Sure, it’s not cheap, but it’s a good all-round package from a premium manufacturer, and one we’d be happy to have in our living room. Just beware if you’re seeking a powerful machine for use on the road, as the poor battery life and reflective display limit mobility somewhat.

This is not a cheap laptop. If you're going out to spend £1,000 on a portable computer you want it to do a wide variety of different things and the HDX16 does most of them in style: did we mention there's a TV tuner inside and a webcam in the lid?

HP's HDX16 goes a long way toward bringing a good multimedia experience with you on the road, but it lacks the juice to last for the long haul (and, as a larger laptop, could be a bit much to lug around). On the other hand, it packs just enough of a performance punch to let you watch all the movies and play all the games you want while going mobile. But the kind of power this machine packs doesn't exactly come cheap.

HP's HDX16 is a multimedia powerhouse, handling TV, HD content and music with aplomb. It's not a games machine, but it'll run most modern titles well enough to suit casual players. Just don't expect to do all this multimedia malarkey for too long away from the mains, OK?

HP has done an excellent job of balancing price and features with their Pavilion X16-1040us. With the new Core 2 Duo P8400 processor and GeForce 9600M GT graphics, the system is very capable of PC gaming and many other high performance applications. The inclusion of new connectors such as HDMI and even eSATA allow it to connect to a wide range of external devices. The only two things really going against the Pavilion X16 are its larger size compared to 15.4-inch laptops and teh glossy screen prone to reflections.

With its stunning display, Blu-ray drive, TV tuner, booming Altec Lansing speakers and 16:9 aspect ratio, the HP HDX 16 is made for people who want a powerful multimedia machine that’s still light enough to carry around once in a while. Although the Sony VAIO FW series is sleeker and lasts longer on a charge, for nearly $300 less, the HDX 16 excels where it really counts, delivering superior productivity and graphics performance and more-powerful sound. The HDX 16 also looks more like a premium machine compared with the HP Pavilion dv7, which lacks the HDX 16’s 1080p display option. The touchpad could be smoother, and we wish the touch-sensitive buttons were more responsive, but overall the HDX 16 is a desktop replacement in a mainstream notebook’s body that delivers great value for the price.

HP HDX16t User Review

As the first laptop I bought, the HP HDX 16 has exceeded my expectations. I highly recommend this to anyone who likes to play games but also needs more than just a video card. The HP HDX 16 is a very well rounded machine that does everything I ask of it. If you want to play games online, do video editing, program or just surf the Internet, or everything simultaneously; this laptop is definitely for you. It is more portable than the 18" HDX but not extremely portable like the HP dv4 (14"). If it is a choice between the dv5 and HDX 16, go with the HDX 16. It is well worth the cost, and you will not be disappointed.

The HP HDX16t rides the line between a thin-and-light and a desktop-replacement laptop. Whichever category it falls into, you're bound to do a double take when you see it—it's a marked transformation from HP's Pavilion line. (HP is branding the HDX systems as higher-end and the Pavilions as more mainstream.) The HP HDX16t is the sexiest 16-inch media center on the market, assuming you can live with the limited battery options.

It's no wonder the humble desktop PC looks like it's going the way of the dodo when there are laptops like the HP HDX X16 on the market. Priced at around £975, the configuration reviewed here, the HDX X16-1010EA, boasts pretty much all the power and entertainment prowess you'd expect from a desktop PC, but is packed into a chassis that's portable enough to comfortably move around the home, or ferry between your abode and the office. Despite some design flaws, the HP HDX X16 is an exemplary entertainment laptop. The screen is first-class, there's plenty of power under the hood and you also get a Blu-ray drive for watching HD movies. If you can afford the relatively high asking price, you won't be disappointed.

Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.

NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT: Successor of the 8600M GT and because of the smaller 65nm production process the card is higher clocked (and therefore faster) with the same current consumption.Furthermore, it features an improved video processor (VP3) and HybridPower to save current (in conjunction with the 9100M G).

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.

Intel Core 2 Duo: This is the Core Duo and Core Solo successor with a longer pipeline and 5-20% more speed without more power consumption. As an addition to the Core Duo design there exists a fourth decoder, an amplified SSE-unit and an additional arithmetical logical unit (ALU).

The Core 2 Duo for laptops is identical to the desktop Core 2 Duo processors but the notebook-processors work with lower voltages (0.95 to 1188 Volt) and a lower Frontside bus clock (1066 vs 667 MHz). The performance of equally clocked notebooks is 20-25% lower than Desktop PCs because of the lower Frontside bus clock and the slower hard disks.

Mid-range dual core processor with 3 MB level 3 cache and a TDP of 25 Watt.

Middle class dual core CPU with a TDP of 25 Watt. For high end gamer the performance could be not sufficient (for class 1 graphic cards).

16.0: 16 inch display-variants exist since 2008 and partially got the market share of 15 inch notebooks. The reason why so many people like displays with medium size is, that this size is not exhausting for the eyes, does not need too much energy and the laptops can be kept quite compact.

» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.

3.15 kg:

This weight is average for notebooks. Therefore the numerous mass of laptops with 15 inch display fits in this class of weight.

3.6 kg:

This laptop is heavy below average, compared with the average of notebooks. Therefore especially desktop replacements fit in this class of weight.

82.07%: This rating should be considered to be average. This is because the proportion of notebooks which have a higher rating is approximately equal to the proportion which have a lower rating.
