Reviews for the HP Elitebook 8540w

HP EliteBook 854w Review: Mobile Workstation Shines
Source: Bios Magazine English
We aren’t sold on the hybrid style keyboard, but overall the EliteBook 8540w offers a very capable and durable mobile workstation that delivers a good deal of power in a package that is still portable enough to take on the road without a roller case.

HP EliteBook 8540w Mobile Workstation Review
Source: Notebookreview.com English
The HP EliteBook 8540w Mobile Workstation had very solid performance in our tests, combined with excellent looks and build quality, topped off with an equally impressive sub-$2,000 price-point. Right now the MSRP of $1,679 is the current going rate with sales few and far between. Compared to the standard EliteBook 8540p with a very similar configuration and performance, it's roughly $300 and change more. With the recent drop in SSDs and hybrid hard drives we were surprised to see no higher performing drives trickle down into the pre-configured models. A slightly more affordable 8540w is also offered with a Core i5 processor and ATI FirePro M5800 for $1,469 for users on a tighter budget. Overall if you are in the market for a Workstation-class notebook, the HP EliteBook series is highly recommended.

Comment

NVIDIA Quadro FX 880M: Professional middle class workstation graphics card that is based on the GeForce 330M core but features lower clock rates.

Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.

620M:

The Core i7-620M is the fastest Dual-Core CPU for laptops (at the time of introduction in Q1 2010). The 620M clocks betwenn 2.66 and 3.33 GHz due to the Turbo Mode and because of Hyperthreading, 4 threads are executed simultaneously. In the package, Intel also included a second die with an integrated GPU (GMA HD) and a memory controller. Therefore, the TDP of 35 Watt of the whole package is still quite good.

15.6": 15 inch display-variants are the standard and are used for more than the half of all notebooks. 15.4 inch display with 16:10 are the standard for notebook displays. However nowadays, more and more 16:9 displays with 15.6 inch appear. The reason why so many people like displays with medium size is, that this size is not exhausting for the eyes, does not need too much energy and the laptops can be kept quite compact.» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.

3 kg: This weight is average for notebooks. Therefore the numerous mass of laptops with 15 inch display fits in this class of weight.
