The HP EliteBook 8440w is an impressive 14-inch business workstation-class laptop, featuring a high-end configuration and features to give you an uncompromised work machine. The laptop is also very well built and has a very good keyboard and touchpad combo. The EliteBook 8440w sells for a price of Rs. 89,995, which is higher than mainstream business laptops like the Dell Vostro 3300 or the HP ProBook 4520s, but it comes with features and internal hardware that are superior than them. The Lenovo Thinkpad T400s is something else you might consider. If you want better portability and battery life, we recommend the Lenovo Thinkpad T400s. But if you are interested in a high-performance portable work machine, you should choose the HP EliteBook 8440w business laptop.

I have nothing but praise to heap on the HP EliteBook 8440w. It is a fast, powerful, well-built laptop that provides everything a corporate user could want. My only serious complaint about the 8440w is the weight – the laptop is far heavier than I’d like a 14 inch laptop to be. There are, of course, reasons why this laptop is heavy. However, this is built to be a mobile workstation, and the increased weight works against the mobile part of the equation.

HP has a real winner on its hands here, by most accounts. We are not certain if the company intentionally designed this machine to be a killer crossover between consumer notebooks and mobile workstations, but that's exactly what was delivered. The 14" form factor is extremely mobile, and the sub-5lb. weight makes it easy to toss in a backpack and forget about it.

In the mobile workstation class, there are only really three major players: Dell, Lenovo, and HP. And maybe Apple as well, if you want to consider the artistic/design side of things. In that group, the EliteBook 8440w ends up being a fairly unique product—it's the only real workstation class 14" notebook on the market.

It's not cheap, but the EliteBook 8440w has one of the highest power-to-portability ratios we've encountered in many years of laptop testing. Indeed, its potent CPU and GPU and high-resolution screen make it the mightiest 14-inch laptop we've ever tested, and its battery life impresses as well. If you crave entry- to mid-level workstation muscle in a package more portable than you thought possible, check it out.

Big corporations have the budgets to buy the bleeding-edge, no-compromise business laptops, which is why companies like HP build the best. The HP EliteBook 8440w ($1,650 direct) is a force to be reckoned with in the business world, with parts that include an Intel Core i7 processor (dual core), workstation Nvidia graphics, and speedy hard drives. The HP EliteBook 8440w is built to withstand physical abuse and runs on parts that are meaner and longer-running than its rivals.

The HP EliteBook 8440w won't win awards for ultrathin design elements or elegant looks, but underneath the almost military-style exterior is a dual-core (with Hyperthreading) Intel CPU coupled with an nVidia Quadro FX 380M professional-grade graphics processor. When you first unpack the laptop, the muted magnesium-clad system impresses with its solid feel. The EliteBook 8440w is a solid corporate laptop with a great keyboard, but it isn't a multimedia powerhouse.

Buyers may be flocking to shiny, low-cost laptops, but there’s still a segment of the population that needs a fast machine that can take the rigors of road use. For those business and power users, HP offers its EliteBook line. The HP EliteBook 8440w uses a top-end Intel processor and Nvidia Quadro graphics engine to deliver excellent performance to mobile professionals. It’s a bit bulkier than other 14-inch laptops, but you get a lot of features for a reasonable price.

At $1,649, the HP EliteBook 8440w is on the expensive side for a Core i7 system with a midrange graphics card, but its price also reflects the sturdiness, security, and support that comes with a system of this caliber. Still, with the portability of the 8440w comes some trade-offs; its graphics card is not nearly as powerful as larger workstations, which may turn off some potential buyers.

Business Toolbox. Those who need a notebook as a constant companion need more than a display with keys in front of it. The 14 incher wants to vindicate its high-class claim with connection variety, robustness, and Core i5-520M power.

The HP EliteBook 8440p looks stunning while retaining a functional design, and it offers pretty much everything you'd want from a business notebook. Check it out in store and prepare to be smitten. It's not cheap, but for a business notebook of this calibre we think that's a pretty reasonable proposition.

For business users on a budget, the HP EliteBook 8440p represents a very good bargain. You get excellent Core i5 performance, decent battery life, and a stylish, sturdy chassis for less than $1,000. Considering an identically configured Lenovo ThinkPad T410 costs about $150 more but lacks the metal lid and deck, we feel that the 8440p is the better deal, both in the short and long term.

HP: Founded in 1939, the US company is a major server and printer manufacturer and one of the leading IT companies in the world. Until 2015, the company was called Hewlett-Packard Company. After a split, the computer division was renamed HP Inc.

In 2023, HP had an approximate market share of 22% of global PC sales, making it number 2 after Lenovo.

Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.

NVIDIA Quadro FX 380M: Professional entry level graphics card with certified drivers, based on the same chip as the GeForce 310M.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) HD Graphics: Onboard graphics card that is built in the new Arrandale CPUs (Core i3 / i5 / i7 Dual Cores). Depending on the model and Turbo Boost, the GMA HD is clocked between 166 and 766 MHz.

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.

620M:

The Core i7-620M is the fastest Dual-Core CPU for laptops (at the time of introduction in Q1 2010). The 620M clocks betwenn 2.66 and 3.33 GHz due to the Turbo Mode and because of Hyperthreading, 4 threads are executed simultaneously. In the package, Intel also included a second die with an integrated GPU (GMA HD) and a memory controller. Therefore, the TDP of 35 Watt of the whole package is still quite good.

Intel Core i5:

520M:

The Core i5-520M has only 3 MB L3 Cache (compared to the I7-640M) and clocks between 2.4-2.93 GHz (Turbo Mode). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD 3150) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.

14.00:

14 inch display size represents a middle ground between the small subnotebook formats and the screens of the standard 15 inch laptops.

The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact.

In the past, 14-inch devices were very rare, but now they are the standard for laptops after the 15-inchers.

» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.

2.363 kg:

2.7 kg:

With this weight, a laptop is rather heavier than average. Devices in this range shine more with screen size and performance than with mobility.

84.94%: This rating is slightly above average, there are somewhat more devices with worse ratings. However, clear purchase recommendations look different.
