Google Nexus 4 gets unofficial Android 5 update

Nexus 4 now has unofficial Android 5 Lollipop update

Although Google plans to roll out the Android 5.0 Lollipop update for older Nexus handsets soon, Nexus 4 users can already get one unofficial release.

Android 5.0 Lollipop should roll out to owners of the Nexus 4, 5, 7 and 10 in the next few weeks, but Google did not reveal the precise date yet. While users of the Nexus 5 smartphone and the Nexus 7 (2013) slate can already download and install preview Lollipop images for their devices directly from Google, Nexus 4 can only receive unofficial Android 5.0 updates for now.

Percy_g2 is a member of the notorious XDA-developers forum who recently ported the Android 5.0 Lollipop preview image mentioned above to load on Google Nexus 4 handsets. This unofficial build faced a lot of issues in the first release, but the second Android 5.0 alpha image by Percy ironed out most of them.

As it usually happens with such early unofficial builds, the problems reported by users include sensors not working properly (or at all) and various mobile data connectivity issues. Google Nexus 4 users who are willing to try this unofficial Android 5.0 Lollipop update should be careful to back up their devices first, obviously. Until the official update comes out, Percy_g2 may release even more refined builds based on the official preview ROM, so stay tuned.
