Column: CeBIT 2009 Hannover - Day 1

Panic proof – or the nice sides of the CeBIT

Barely a day goes by in which you don't hear about the newest effect of the financial crisis in the media. It's not an easy time for the Cebit, the biggest European IT-exposition where all renowned manufacturers always try to outplay each other with their stands without any yield to reason. We were on-site and checked it out...

Cebit 2009@night
Good night CeBIT...

Joseph Reger, CTO from Fujitsu-Siemens Computers brought it to the point quickly in the opening press conference from FSC: "I have been here on the Cebit in Hannover for 16 years, but it was never as tough as this year..." – doubtlessly taking the words out of the mouths of many IT-branch colleagues.

While some suffer, others follow a completely different tactic – they simply wholly stay away from the Cebit. This applies to a whole range of manufacturers this year, whose presence is barely noticeable or rather quite simply not existent. Besides the world biggest PC and notebook manufacturer, HP, this is also true for regular guests of the Cebit like Samsung and Toshiba, who always appeared with flamboyant stands.

Mondays might not be an official exhibition day of the Cebit week, but many manufacturers use it to present their products to different media, due to the quiet day in regards of visitors. Asus, whose stand was literally attacked last year and always beleaguered from umpteen hundreds of visitors, was naturally on the top of our schedule.

As one of the few exhibitionists, Asus decided to even enlarge their stand considerably in order to prevent such a commotion, as it was the order of the day, for the new products of the Eee series in 2008.
Asus also presents a whole new range of notebook products at their stand. Haris Musemic, Product Manager Mobile Computing from Asus, kindly took a good deal time for us and presented the current flood of models.

For instance the M52Vp could be seen, a new representative of the compact but high performance multimedia category, equipped with efficient Core 2 Duo CPUs and a new resourceful middle class graphic card from ATI, the Mobility Radeon HD4650.  This should correlate to the performance level of a Geforce 9650M GT and should be of interest for occasional gamers.

A further highlight at Asus' stand is without a doubt the W90Vp gaming notebook, probably having the strongest gaming configuration in a notebook, with an Intel Core 2 Quad Q9000 processor and two Mobility Radeon HD4870 graphic cards from ATI. Around 15 000 2D Marks 2006 should not be a problem for the notebook, according to ASUS. Rumor has it, believe it or not, that up to 20k points are made possible by not closer defined tuning measures. We are curious and looking forward to make an extensive test with a test sample.

There is also news from ASUS out of the Eee family area - that is the T91 and the T101H models, a tablet/convertible variant of the successful classical Eee PC. We were already allowed to take a closer look at these in the scope of a press conference in Vienna.

So much to our first day at the Cebit. The only thing left for me to say quoting our fellow countryman, the Governor Arnie, at the opening ceremony today: "I'll be back!"

Conclusively, a small selection of the "pleasant side effects" of this kind of exposition visit:
