BIOS update makes Intel Core Ultra CPUs offer noticeable performance improvements
Customers and reviewers have started to play around with laptops packing the Intel Core Ultra CPUs. With this, we are now getting interesting info about the processors. According to a review by UltrabookReview, some of the laptops are currently equipped with a pre-release BIOS firmware.
As the review points out, this pre-release firmware is undermining the performance of the Meteor Lake CPUs. If you're wondering why, it's mainly because the pre-release BIOS makes the power delivery process less efficient. Intel has noticed the issue and is said to be working with the partners to provide a fix.
Andrei Girbea from UltrabookReview confirmed that ASUS has already released a UEFI firmware update for its laptops with Intel Core Ultra CPUs. After the BIOS update, the Meteor Lake processors saw a noticeable jump in performance and efficiency. To be precise, the Cinebench R23 scores on the ASUS Zenbook 14 OLED UX3405 improved by 12.5%.
Another review, which is from Golden Pig Upgrade, pointed out the same issue a week ago. The reviewer said that there was a scheduling problem with the new Intel Core Ultra CPUs, which was happening due to early power measurement. However, after updating the laptop, Golden Pig Upgrade noticed improvements in both the performance and power draw of the Meteor Lake chipsets. You can check out the performance before and after the BIOS update from the screenshots attached below.
