The Asus S56CA-DH51 is another new 15-inch Windows 8 Ultrabook that has an attractive aluminum design and a speedy Intel Core i5 CPU to back up its looks. Thanks to a 24GB SSD HD, it boots up quickly but the keyboard and battery life need some work.

The ASUS S56CA-DH51 delivers strong performance, a speedy boot time and good sound inside a slim and solid design. We just wish this system lasted longer on a charge and that the keyboard had a little more spring in its step. If you want to dip your toes into the Windows 8 pool --and you don't need touch -- then the S56CA-DH51 should serve you well for years to come.

Let's get this bit out of the way: Is the Asus S56CA a good Ultrabook? No. It's too heavy, too large, too noisy and too slow. But is it a good mid-range home laptop in general? It's not bad. It packs the waking speed of an SSD, an optical drive and good usability into a body that's still slimmer than most non-Ultrabook laptops.

The Asus VivoBook S56CA-DH31-CA ($599.99 CAD list) is a Windows 8-equipped ultrabook that stands apart from the increasingly saturated field by virtue of its integrated DVD burner, reasonable price tag, and generous two-year warranty. Although the Asus VivoBook S56CA-DH31-CA boasts an integrated DVD burner, reasonable price tag, and generous two-year warranty, its subpar keyboard and average performance hold it back from ultrabook greatness.

Although the market is presently brimming with ultrabooks, the Asus VivoBook S56CA-DH31-CA stands apart from the pack thanks to its integrated DVD burner, reasonable price tag, and generous two-year warranty. That said, its subpar keyboard and average performance hold it back from achieving pure ultrabook nirvana. It's worth checking out, but be sure to fully explore other options before doing so.

Asus: ASUSTeK Computer Incorporated, a Taiwanese multinational company, produces motherboards, graphics cards, optical drives, PDAs, computer monitors, notebook computers, servers, networking products, mobile phones, computer cases, computer components, and computer cooling systems. The company's 2007 revenues reached US$6.9 billion. ASUS also produces components for other manufacturers. The Eee PC initiated the netbook boom in 2008.
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.
NVIDIA GeForce GT 635M:
Essentially a renamed GeForce GT 555M available in two or more variants with 96 or 144 shaders and 128 bit / 192 bit DDR3 or GDDR5 memory.
Intel HD Graphics 4000: Processor graphics card in the high end Ivy Bridge models. Offers a different clock speed in the different CPU models (ULV to desktop quad core) and therefore a different performance.

Intel Core i5:
3317U: Ivy-Bridge-based ULV-CPU in Q2 2012. Offers a core clock of 1.7 - 2.6 GHz and an HD 4000 GPU (350 - 1050 MHz). The TDP is rated at 17 W.
Intel Core i3:
3217U: Ivy-Bridge-based ULV-CPU in Q2 2012. Offers a core clock of 1.8 GHz (no Turbo Boost) and an HD 4000 GPU (350 - 1050 MHz). The TDP is rated at 17 W.
Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
3517U: Fast Ivy-Bridge-based ULV-CPU in Q2 2012. Offers a core clock of 1.9 - 3.0 GHz and an HD 4000 GPU (350 - 1150 MHz). The TDP is rated at 17 W.
15.6: 15 inch display-variants are the standard and are used for more than the half of all notebooks. 15.4 inch display with 16:10 are the standard for notebook displays. However nowadays, more and more 16:9 displays with 15.6 inch appear. The reason why so many people like displays with medium size is, that this size is not exhausting for the eyes, does not need too much energy and the laptops can be kept quite compact.

2.2 kg:
These sub-notebooks weight less than the average of all notebooks, but represent a heavier class of weight among the sub-notebooks. 13 inch displays are normal for this class of weight.
2.3 kg:
71.78%: This rating is bad. Most notebooks are better rated. This is not a recommendation for purchase.
