In addition to good speed, battery life and build quality, the Aspire 5742G is also quite affordable. It's $1199, which we think is a great price for a laptop that can be used to do a little of everything. And don't think that because it's a 15.6in model that it's best suited to a shackled position on your desk. On the contrary, it's actually quite light and not too much of a pain to carry around with you.

For some, the purpose of a laptop isn't to be exciting or sexy, so much as to be functional. Those who feel that way might appreciate the Acer Aspire 5742G-7200, an utterly uninspiring 15.6-inch laptop that, nevertheless, has a pretty good set of specs for its $750 price. On a price-to-performance basis, the Acer Aspire 5742G-7200 is one of the better laptop buys on the market, but better-designed alternatives can be had for a little more money.

The Acer Aspire 5742G-7200 may be priced like a budget notebook, but its Core i5 CPU and dedicated Nvidia graphics chip deliver surprisingly good performance for a $749.99 machine. A top performer in its price class, the Aspire 5742G-7200 demonstrates that bland can be beautiful if you need speed on a budget.

Acer appears to have scaled back some of the components in the 5742G, probably to keep the series affordable. It uses mono instead of stereo speakers, which detracts from watching DVDs on the unit (unless you use headphones, naturally). Its 500GB Serial ATA hard drive spins at the low end of the speed scale, 5,400 rpm. Bluetooth isn't supported out of the box, though we found the machine's Wi-Fi reception quite good.

With a price tag of just $750, the Acer Aspire 5742G-7200 is a very affordable laptop that combines performance and graphics into a 15-inch laptop. While it may not have the highest level of graphics, they are Direct X 11 compatible and capable of dealing with the modest resolution of the screen. Users will have to contend with the glossy display and slightly below average battery life. Still, it offers a great step up from most budget systems that aren't capable of 3D graphics.

Geforce bargain. Acer puts interesting hardware in a low priced bundle that is available for starting at 699 euros. The newest GeForce GT 540M is still extremely uncommon and we also don't find eight gigabyte of RAM very often. Performance for money in excess?

15.6: 15 inch display-variants are the standard and are used for more than the half of all notebooks. 15.4 inch display with 16:10 are the standard for notebook displays. However nowadays, more and more 16:9 displays with 15.6 inch appear. The reason why so many people like displays with medium size is, that this size is not exhausting for the eyes, does not need too much energy and the laptops can be kept quite compact.
