40% Ultraportable Notebooks
Source: Wired Magazine English
Toshiba's R200 may be an attractive choice - if aesthetics like glossy metallic trim and soothing blue lights are of the utmost importance to you. Wired: Lightest model in the group. Quick access to ports and control knobs. Tired: Screen is comparably dim and fuzzy. Three-hour, 19-minute battery life is the worst. Price too high for low performance.

70% Toshiba Portege R400-106 review
Source: PC Advisor English
The attractive Toshiba Portege R400-106 ultraportable tablet laptop comes with a sparkling white chassis (wonder where they got that idea from?), with a shiny Toshiba logo on the lid. It's also very tactile, as the Toshiba Portege R400-106 is extremely small and light, at just 304x239x29.5mm and 1.7kg. The Toshiba Portege R400-106 is certainly sophisticated, both in terms of looks and functionality. If you want a tablet PC this is probably one of the most attractive you'll find, it's light, well built and highly secure, but when it comes to the performance, price ratio it doesn't come out on top.

80% Toshiba Portege R400 tablet PC Review
Source: Pocket Lint English
If you’ve ever spent some time with a Tablet PC then you’ll find features you’ll like but more often than not, you’ll come away thinking that it’s just a little too heavy and the battery life doesn’t warrant the extra expense over a standard notebook. Well, Toshiba hasn’t addressed a price issue, as at £1775 (inc. VAT) this is the most expensive tablet we’ve seen in a while but what the company has done is overall the style and power of the machine, turning the R400 into something truly special. Billed by Toshiba as "the symbol of sophistication", it's easy to see why. The crisp black and white look is definitely more sophisticated than the average machine and weighing in at 1.8kg, it’s a machine light enough to carry around with a fair degree of ease. When it comes to usability, we found it well above average.

Toshiba Portege R400 Tablet PC Review
Source: Notebookreview.com English
The R400 is an innovative Tablet, but it comes with a hefty price tag. It has a solid design that works great in Tablet and notebook mode. There is no flimsy feeling to it and the LED backlit screen is great for watching movies or checking out your favorite photos. The screen is glossy and gives off reflections under bright light conditions, so be aware outdoor use won't work. Overall Toshiba could have gone with a more powerful processor because the system runs a little slow, especially since it has Windows Vista Ultimate. I would have liked it to have a little more performance endurance and less eye candy appeal if you could trade such things off. The R400 does sport the SideShow display, which is a unique feature for the business professional on-the-go, but at the end of the day the high price tag and lack of performance to match that price stand in the way of it being a top-competitor for your average consumer.

Toshiba Portege R400 Hands On Review (Video)
Source: Notebookreview.com English
I have to admit though, I want the R400 to succeed. It does a lot of great things, but in our view it's version 1 hardware that needs to be improved to find a viable market share. Toshiba put two years of engineering into this product and the work shows. There are a lot of impressive features, but the $2600 price tag and a few questionable design decisions make the R400 a tough purchase.

The good: Excellent design; secondary OLED display provides useful info when the lid is closed, easy to use EV-DO. The bad: Disappointing performance and battery life; ridiculously expensive. The bottom line: If money is no object for you, the Toshiba Portege R400 is an eye-catching, Windows Vista conversation piece, but the rest of us will want more performance from a system this expensive.

Toshiba shakes things up with a striking convertible that sports a bright LED display, fast mobile broadband, and a convenient external screen for at-a-glance alerts. We like, not love, the Toshiba Portégé R400-S4931. The design is a bit polarizing, and we think an optical drive should have been integrated. But we appreciate the system's light weight, and on-the-go users will really appreciate the external display for alerts and the fast EV-DO Rev. A connectivity.

Toshiba's Portégé R400 Has Exciting Features
Source: Tom's Guide English
Toshiba's Portégé R400-S4931 Tablet PC is quite impressive in many ways. It looks great and has a range of new and special features that make it an impressive little notebook computer. Though some of its components are less than stellar performers, Vista Ultimate, unbridled by memory resident programs, runs quite fast in both standard and Tablet PC mode. I'll reserve judgment on performance until I've got some memory resident apps to test out and until Vista-ready notebook performance tests are available, but for now I'm high on Vista on notebooks like Toshiba's R400, if you plan to keep your notebook fairly vanilla.

Although the Portege R300 is an unique slimline laptop, in its category it is not the top of the line. The Core Duo technology and 4200RPM hard drive make it less attractive. However, the design will definitely raise eyebrows and the 2-lbs of weight is an extreme advantage for mobility.

At $3,630 for this particular configuration (cheaper models are available without built-in WWAN), the R500 is in the same price league as the flagship MacBook Air and Lenovo ThinkPad X300. However, even with the mobile-friendly conveniences of a super-light carry weight and long battery life, the R500’s flimsy build and pokey performance make it feel like a much cheaper laptop.

It's a feature, not a flaw: You can twist the Toshiba Portégé R500's screen in your bare hands. Pressing the plastic panel on the bottom of the case underneath the hard drive makes it pop inward. Toshiba's Portege R500 is pricey and its construction doesn't inspire confidence, but you simply can't argue with how incredibly portable it is. Yes, you can buy cheaper full-size laptops. For us, that makes it a winner.

Apple may get all the headlines with its super-thin MacBook Air (reviewed here), but Toshiba's Portege R500-126 trumps it in many areas. True, it can't compete on thickness - the Toshiba Portege R500-126 is 19.5-25.5mm from thinnest to thickest, while the Air is a mere 0.4-1.94mm. Even in terms of price, the R500 stands up well against the Air once you configure the latter with the 64GB SSD drive, coming in at £1,761 to Apple's £2,028. If you're after a usable, super portable machine that weighs hardly anything then the Toshiba Portege R500-126 will make an excellent travel companion.

When we first saw the Toshiba Portege R500 back in the summer of 2007, it quickly became one of our favorite ultraportable laptops--and one of our favorite laptops overall. Thanks to its small size, light weight, and plentiful extras, the R500 was very close to the final word in ultraportable systems. Toshiba's SSD version of the Portege R500 may be the best ultraportable laptop available right now, and it packs in much of what the MacBook Air lacks while weighing nearly half as much.

Ultra portables have carved a niche in the laptop world as the sexy and stylish of all laptops out in the market. They’re small and lightweight, making them the perfect travel companion if you’re a power user who is constantly on-the-go. However, as a result of their compact form factor the ultra portable is sometimes limited in its performance and feature sets, making them a product geared more for the travelling businessman. These machines usually have slower performing processors, lack of any video graphics capabilities, and no optical drive built-in in an effort to save battery power and space.
Toshiba has really brought out many of the world’s firsts in this ultra-portable machine.  It’s currently the thinnest and lightest full-featured ultra-portable you can buy on the market.  And with it, you’ll really stand out and impress passersby.

In the face of it, the Sony TZ12 and the Toshiba Portégé R500 have plenty in common. They weigh practically the same, have similar-sized screens, and share ridiculously tiny dimensions. Both use Intel's ultra-low voltage range of Core 2 Duos and both will happily fit into the very smallest of shoulder bags. Yet while the Sony costs £2,099 (inc VAT), the Toshiba weighs in at nearly £800 less. If you think that means there's no reason to be tempted by the more expensive Sony, though, think again - the R500's build quality is noticeably less impressive than that of the TZ12. In particular, the Portégé's chassis has a plasticky feel, with a little too much flex in the palmrest for our comfort. As such, the R500 is just that little less reassuring when the time comes to stuffing it in a bag or running for that train. The different scale of budget shows through when it comes to usability, too: the keyboard in particular feels noticeably spongy.

Toshiba redefines the ultraportable with the thinnest and lightest notebook with a 12.1-inch widescreen display and an optical drive. One look at the Toshiba Portégé R500 and you know you're in the presence of a breakthrough. Weighing a mere 2.4 pounds, this notebook has all of the makings of a true no-compromise ultraportable. The silver magnesium-alloy chassis is sophisticated chic, and we love the full-sized keyboard that doesn't waste even a centimeter of surrounding space. This superthin, superlight machine is easy to grab and go in a hurry. The lack of mobile broadband is a bummer, and the razor-thin display lacks the punch of some other ultraportables, but overall this is a very good laptop for users who care more about portability than sheer power. At its thinnest point, the R500 measures 0.8 inches thick, widening to one inch on the backside. The subtle wedge design makes the notebook easy to slide into a tote bag.

Perhaps the laptop we've been most looking forward to checking out this year, Toshiba's Portege R500 is very close to the final word in ultraportable systems. Incredibly thin and light, it manages to squeeze a 12-inch display into a package even lighter than Sony's 11-inch VAIO TZ150. While there have been some less expensive ultraportables we've liked recently (such as the Averatec 1579), both the R500 and VAIO TZ are premium products, with configurations ranging from $2,000 to 3,000, thanks to high-end options, including solid state hard drives. While the VAIO and the R500 have similar prices and features, there are trade-offs. We were disappointed by the lack of mobile broadband in our R500, but we also found it offered better performance than the VAIO (largely Sony's fault for packing their system with enough bloatware to slow it to a crawl).

A super-light laptop with great battery life, but the screen is both its stand-out feature and - for some - its Achilles heel.

Comment

Toshiba: Toshiba is one of the biggest international notebook-manufacturer. There exist many reviews for Toshiba models. The ratings of German magazines are very positive, but the relation of price and value is evaluated rather average. The ratings according the features and display are also quite well for Toshiba notebooks.

Toshiba reviews

Only older games can be played fluently with these graphics chips (if they were not too demanding). Shared memory graphic cores in this category got the advantage of less heat production and longer battery runtimes. For office, internet, image processing, and video editing tasks these graphics chips are still useable without any restrictions.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 900: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900 is an integrated (onboard) graphic chip with shared memory on Mobile Intel 915GM chipset. It is the predecessor of Graphics Media Accelerator 950. The performance can be compared with the Mobile Radeon 9000 (with a 64 bit memory bus).

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 950: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 is an integrated (onboard) graphic chip on Mobile Intel 945GM chipset. It is a faster clocked version of the GMA 900 and supports no hardware T&L (Transform & Lightning) accelleration (which is required for some games).

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) X3100: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) X3100 is an integrated (onboard) graphic chip on a Mobile Intel 965GM chipset. It is the successor of GMA 950 and features a fully programmable pipeline (supports Aero Glass fully and DirectX 10 with newest drivers). The peformance of the X3100 is clearly better than the GMA 950, still demanding modern games won't run fluently.

Lower end of Graphics Cards for users who want to play games. New games should run on these cards, but only with decreased details and mediocre resolution.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD: Onboard (shared Memory) GPU built in the GM45 chipset (Montevina). Because of two more shaders and a higher core clock, much faster than the old GMA X3100. Still not advisable for gamers (DirectX 10 games not playable or only with very low settings). The integrated video processor is able to help decode HD videos (AVC/VC-2/MPEG2) , e.g., for a fluent Blu-Ray playback with slow CPUs.

Intel Pentium M: With Intel chip set (855 or 915) and Intel WLAN also available with the name Centrino (name for the package).
In the comparison very fast per megahertz and very modest with weaknesses in floating point operations.
It is also available as a low voltage version with very small current consumption.

Intel Core Duo: Double Core processor with a very good relation of performance to current consumption. The 2 MB L2 Cache are used together by the double. The maximum capacity of 31 watts is only 4 watts more than with the Pentium M (predecessor). Both cores are lowered automatically and independently of each other by speed steps down to 1 GHz. In addition it now supports also SSE3 instructions. At least it is just as fast as a equivalent Pentium M. With applications, which were designed for multi-processors, the performance can be nearly twice as fast as with the Pentium M (e.g. CineBench around 86% fast)

Intel Core 2 Duo: This is the Core Duo and Core Solo successor with a longer pipeline and 5-20% more speed without more power consumption. As an addition to the Core Duo design there exists a fourth decoder, an amplified SSE-unit and an additional arithmetical logical unit (ALU).

The Core 2 Duo for laptops is identical to the desktop Core 2 Duo processors but the notebook-processors work with lower voltages (0.95 to 1188 Volt) and a lower Frontside bus clock (1066 vs 667 MHz). The performance of equally clocked notebooks is 20-25% lower than Desktop PCs because of the lower Frontside bus clock and the slower hard disks.

12.1: This is the most common display format for subnotebooks and an average size for subnotebooks.
The advantage is, that the subnotebook can be small dimensioned and can be carried easily. Further the tiny display has the advantage, that it needs less power, which improves the battery runtime and in consequence the mobility. The disadvantage is that reading of texts is very exhausting vor the eyes. High resolutions can hardly be used.

>> To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.

1.1 kg:

This subnotebook is one of the most lightweight of all notebooks and can be carried very easily. There exist hardly any models in this extreme class of weight. 7-9 inch displays are normal for this class of weight.

1.6 kg:

This sub-notebook weighs less than the average of all notebooks and represents a medium class of weight among the sub-notebooks. 11 inch displays are normal for this class of weight.

72.87%: This rating is bad. Most notebooks are better rated. This is not a recommendation for purchase.
