Call of Juarez: Gunslinger is an arcade shooter that takes players to the Wild West. The story follows Silas Greaves, an aging bounty hunter who shares tales of his wild exploits during a saloon gathering, letting players experience them firsthand. Told entirely from his perspective, the narrative uses unreliable storytelling, with sudden changes – like enemies disappearing or entire sections of levels reshaping – directly impacting gameplay. The German gaming magazine GameStar praised this inventive approach, calling Gunslinger a “fantastically narrated tube shooter.” The adventure is relatively short; according to Game2Gether, it can be completed in about five to six hours.
The gameplay focuses on fast, arcade-style shootouts in strictly linear levels – too linear for GameStar’s taste, as they offer little room for exploration or discovery. Still, the Wild West atmosphere and variety of locations received praise. The gunplay was also well received, with arcade elements like points, combos, kill streaks and a “concentration mode” for slow-motion duels adding plenty of excitement. Visually, Gunslinger isn’t exactly stunning, but for a low-budget title it’s still worth a look.
It’s worth noting that Call of Juarez: Gunslinger is strictly a single-player experience with no multiplayer mode, online or offline. It does, however, include a duel system where quick reflexes and precise aim determine the outcome. GameStar gave the game a solid 82 out of 100, while Metacritic shows a similar reception with a Metascore of 79 and a User Score of 8.1. On Steam, it enjoys overwhelming approval, with 94% positive reviews from nearly 19,000 players.
