Reviews for the Samsung Q35

Complete with Vista Home Premium, the Samsung Q35 is the smallest and easily the most portable Vista laptop we've reviewed. The Samsung Q35 is perfectly suited to those wanting a stylish, portable laptop without compromising on power.

The Q35 is a well built smaller notebook which, at least in its red form, has a certain amount of style and charisma. It is responsive with good processing power and a large, but quiet fan. If lightly loaded, it can run for about 5 hours off its 6 cell battery. Needless to say, I am disappointed that I cannot replicate Samsung’s claim about the battery running time, but I always suspected there some optimism. This review became diverted into a research project into power consumption and I hope my observations are of interest and use to others. I think there is a slot in the market for the green Q35 with the lower power L7400 CPU. This would offer most of the speed benefits of the T5600, when speed is needed, while reducing battery consumption during the less busy periods. Maybe this is what Samsung had in mind when they derived their 7 hours running time.

The Q35 may be the bigger sibling of Samsung's diminutive ultraportable notebook, the Q30, but weighing in at just 1.89kg it can still claim to be a lightweight and should pose few problems for anyone wanting to lug it around all day. Stylish and well built, the Q35 combines everything you need in an ultraportable notebook; light weight, good battery life and - especially in the choice of CPU - excellent performance. Add in the reasonable price tag and you have a capable, mobile laptop.

Samsung’s updated Q35 is just as impressive as the original. The new Core 2 Duo processor brings with it extra performance and features, while the red lid really does make it look that bit more special. If you prefer the understated silver, that option is still available as the first picture in this review shows. But best of all, Samsung isn’t expecting you to pay through the nose for its fully featured, thin and light notebook.

So, the question we come to is: Is the Q35 worth its price tag? It really depends on what you need your notebook for. If you need a notebook for mobility but also need a DVD/CD-RW combo drive and won’t be using it much for viewing movies and don’t mind bass-y audio, then by all means get it. If you’re a stickler for details like excellent audio and you want a multimedia machine, then you might consider other options. I found this Samsung lacking but then I tend to use the notebook for everything, which is why I am biased towards multimedia-centric PCs.

The Samsung Q35 ticks pretty much all the boxes when it comes to ultra-mobile computing. It’s small, light, stylish and is packed with cutting edge features to keep even heavy duty users happy. The dual core CPU, super-multi DVD writer and well above average battery life combine to make the Q35 a very tempting prospect. But when you throw the attractive price into the equation, it’s impossible not to recommend this notebook.
