Medion’s Akoya S5612 notebook is available from 29 October from Aldi shops. Its 15.6in widescreen has an anti-glare coating but was disappointingly murky at first glance. On further inspection the default screen brightness was very low – when increased it was better, if still slightly washed out. A decent laptop with good looks but let down by a couple of flaws.

15-inch display variants are the standard and are used for more than half of all laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, often allows high resolutions and thus offers rich details on the screen, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact - simply the standard compromise.
