Marvel's Venom was reportedly 'small enough' to be cancelled post 2023's Insomniac breach

Marvel's Venom could have been an easy candidate for cancellation after a large data breach at Insomniac's end in November 2023.

The long-rumored Marvel’s Venom game for the PS5, being developed by Insomniac, was revealed following a major data breach in late 2023. The leak revealed around 1.7 terabytes of internal documents from the studio, including the first details about the Venom spin-off, complete with concept art, story outlines, and a targeted 2025 release window.

At the time, the files indicated that the game was in pre-production stages, with Venom posing as a darker and more brutal counterpart to Spider-Man, potentially exploring Eddie Brock as the new Venom in Insomniac’s Spider-verse.

However, no official word has been released on the game as of September 2025, leaving fans wondering what exactly happened to Insomniac’s plans. The latest official update comes from That REDACTED Guy, who shared details about Venom on September 9.

In a post responding to Insomniac’s ambitions about the game, he said, “Venom is interesting from what I know. The combat system was completed, the traversal system was completed, the story was essentially smoothed out, and even mo-cap and lines from Tony Todd were recorded.”

This pretty much confirms earlier leaked data showing Tony Todd, who voiced Venom in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, had been tapped for the role, for motion capture sessions for the iconic antagonist.

However, REDACTED added a caveat, stating that the game’s relatively small scope made it “small enough where, due to the breach, it could have been scrapped,” implying that the exposure of sensitive assets might have prompted PlayStation and Insomniac Games to quietly cancel the game to mitigate future risks of a playable build showing up unofficially.

This would be quite similar to how Wolverine has gone radio silent, as the last Wolverine announcement was made exactly four years ago on September 10, 2021.

However, other leaks contradict this report, as in July 2025, it was rumored that the Venom game wasn’t canceled but merely delayed, with its launch pushed from 2025 to 2026 due to pipeline adjustments at Insomniac following the breach and the studio’s acquisition by Sony in 2021.

It’s rumored that Wolverine, Venom, Saros, and a new God of War Game could potentially make their way to a State of Play event rumored for late September 2025.
