Gaming laptops are cool, but like most mass-produced products, they look like every other system on the market -- unless you get your system from companies like Xotic PC. The company has taken a rather average MSI GT72 Dominator and turned it into a showpiece by adding a cool lid wrap.

Model: The MSI GT72VR (a.k.a. the Dominator) is a gaming device made for serious gamers. MSI claims that it is “the world’s first gaming notebook powered by GeForce GTX 10 series graphics with 40% performance boost”. As its name suggests, the GT72VR is an outright dominator among its rivals. On first sight, the GT72VR looks domineering in its largely black and red build. Its dimensions measure in at 428 x 294 x 48 mm and it weighs 3.78 kg. Its chunky form is inevitable as it is jam packed with high-performance specs, which requires much space for proper ventilations. The keyboard is lit with a spectrum of red, green and blue backlight for light in dim environments. The silver lining printed keys are capable of being subject to long-term wear and tear. They are comparable to a full sized desktop keyboard.
It boasts a 17.3-inch (1920 x 1080) screen, which displays incredible, Full-HD visuals. With its True Color Technology, MSI promises that each panel in a MSI notebook comes with the highest color precision. Sound quality is equally superb as it is enhanced with Nahimic audio software, which offers high definition sound technology. This technology can be found in all of MSI’s gaming laptops these days. One key feature of the GT72VR is its readiness for VR Technology. With the one-click VR solution, gamers will be in for a mind-blowing gaming experience. Powered by the 6th generation Intel Core i7-6700 Processor and Nvidia’s GeForce GTX1060, the capacity of the GT72VR to play demanding games is top-notch. The gaming laptop supports a maximum of 64 GB RAM and comes with a 1 TB HDD and 256 GB SSD storage for running faster programs and games.
In addition, it is equipped with the Killer DoubleShot Pro technology, which kills out unnecessary lags on its performance. Temperature control is always a challenge on gaming machines, yet MSI managed to excel in this aspect with the GT72VR. The ability to keep the machine exceptionally cool is fortified by the Cooler Boost 4 consisting of two internal thermal modules. This pushes cooling design to a whole new level. The machine is surprisingly cool even under heavy load and intense gaming. To heat up the machine, it has to be taken to the edges of its graphic limits. The Dominator is also packed with connectivity options which include 6 x USB 3.0 /3.1 Gen1 ports, 1 x USB 3.1 Gen2 port, 1 x HDMI port, 2 DisplayPorts, 1 Kensington Lock, and a card reader. Via the HDMI port and the Mini DisplayPort 1.2, its Matrix Display can support up to 2 external displays simultaneously. Also mounted on board is an optical drive which is a rare thing in laptops these days. Networking is supported via Killer Gb LAN, WiFi ac, and Bluetooth. This Windows 10 Home system will remain a strong dominator against any of its less well-built adversaries. It isn’t the best gaming machine out there but will certainly push its rivals to come out with worthy competitors.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 Mobile: The mobile GTX 1060 is based on the GP106 chip and offer 1280 shaders. Compared to the identically named desktop version it features a slightly lower clock rate. Games in Full HD and maximum details should run fluently on the card.
With these GPUs you are able to play modern and demanding games fluently at medium detail settings and HD resolution.
» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.
Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
6700HQ: Skylake-based quad-core processor for notebooks. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 530 GPU and is manufactured in 14 nm.» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.
17.30": This display size is a standard format for desktop replacements (DTR). The DTR laptops are heavier to carry, need more power, but texts are easy to read and high resolutions are no problem. DTR are mainly intended for stationary desk use, where weight and energy hunger don't matter. In return, you enjoy the advantages of high resolutions (more details, better legibility).» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.
3.8 kg:
Only a few laptops are in this weight class because the mobility is rather limited due to the high weight.
MSI: Micro-Star International (MSI) was founded in 1986 in Taiwan. MSI is especially known as a manufacturer of motherboards and graphics cards for PCs, but also offers computer accessories, complete systems, motherboards, graphics cards, laptops, desktop PCs, monitors and other components. However, the Microstar brand name in Germany belongs to the Medion company. MSI is known for its gaming products and has developed a wide range of gaming laptops and desktop PCs. The company is also active in workstations, servers and industrial automation. MSI has offices in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia.
81.33%: This rating is slightly above average, there are somewhat more devices with worse ratings. However, clear purchase recommendations look different.
