Wolfenstein: The Old Blood was developed by MachineGames in collaboration with publisher Bethesda and released in May 2015. The prequel takes players to an alternate version of 1946, where the Nazi regime is on the verge of winning World War II. As U.S. elite soldier B.J. Blazkowicz, known from the main series, players travel to Bavaria to infiltrate the infamous Castle Wolfenstein and stop the dark plans of General Totenkopf.
In terms of gameplay, The Old Blood leans into classic shooter strengths: explosive action, tight controls and satisfying hit feedback. As is typical for the series, players can choose between stealthy tactics or all-out gunfire. One standout feature is the versatile pipe, which not only doubles as a brutal melee weapon but also serves as a climbing tool and a means of accessing new areas. The game features a wide selection of firearms – from World War II staples like the MP40 to advanced laser rifles.
Wolfenstein: The Old Blood adds a touch of occult horror to its classic war setting. Alongside regular Nazi soldiers, players face off against super soldiers, drones and even zombies. The campaign is a strictly single-player experience and, according to HowLongToBeat, takes around eight and a half hours to complete. Each of the eight missions also includes an unlockable challenge mode where players can chase high scores, adding several more hours of gameplay beyond the main story.
GameStar awarded Wolfenstein: The Old Blood a strong score of 85 out of 100, praising its classic shooter action, solid technical performance and diverse environments – ranging from castles and villages to caves and even a cable car ride. While the AI occasionally falters and the story isn’t particularly strong, the editors summed it up as “a wonderful old-school shooter without unnecessary baggage.” Since its release, the game has received over 16,000 reviews on Steam, with 90% rated positive. On Metacritic, it holds a Metascore of 76 and a User Score of 7.6.
