BMW Group has celebrated a milestone in India with over 5,000 electric car sales. The German automaker is not sitting on its laurels as it is also setting up a 4,000 km long high-power charging corridor across the Asian country.

BMW has become India’s top-selling electric luxury car brand, surpassing 5,000 EV sales overall, including a record 1,322 units sold in the first half of 2025. The automaker also revealed plans to expand EV charging infrastructure in the country.

BMW will establish a high-power charging corridor spanning 4,000 km across India. It will run from Jammu to Madurai, covering key cities such as Delhi, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Pune, Hubballi, Bengaluru, Coimbatore, and Madurai.

The massive project will be achieved through partnerships with Indian charging companies Statiq and Zeon, with plans for a charging station every 300 km. While it is primarily set up for BMW EV customers, other car brands will also be welcome to use the fast chargers, which range from 120 kW to 720 kW in output.

The premium auto brand had an instant hit with the iX SUV, selling out on its first day in the India EV market in December 2021. The following year saw the release of the MINI Cooper SE and the mid-size sedan BMW i4, with others added over the years.

BMW released the iX1 in 2023 and replaced the standard version with a long-wheelbase version earlier this year, offering more space for rear-seat passengers. The German automaker now assembles the iX1 locally using completely knocked-down (CKD) kits, rather than importing it as a whole, thereby reducing production costs.
