As hard as Asus tries to muck up a good hardware package with a bloated software installation, the U46SV remains an impressive combination of performance, ergonomics, and long battery life. Remove the preinstalled applications you don't want, and you're good to go.

The ASUS U46SV certainly has the features and power to justify its price tag. For about $100 more than the integrated graphics version of this notebook, you get an Nvidia GPU that lets you play some of today's hottest games, plus long battery life and a good-looking chassis. You'll also be able to hear games, movies, and music loud and clear, thanks to the Sonic Focus-powered speakers. What prevents us from giving this laptop a higher rating is the sometime erratic touchpad and the noisy and stiff mouse buttons. The Zenbook UX31 Ultrabook fell a little short for similar reasons. ASUS really needs to concentrate more on usability, because it makes the difference between a very good and great system.

If you're after a slim and light laptop for some work on the go but don't quite want to stretch your wallet for the Asus Zenbook UX31, then the Asus U46SV may be a suitable alternative. The Asus U46SV may be at the heavier end of portable, but it's slim enough to slide into a bag and will be right at home in your office space.

The Asus U46SV-DH51 is another one of those ultrabook laptops that are coming out these days and it's very similar to the Asus Zenbook that we reviewed a little while ago. This model has a lightweight aluminum design and a very bright, good quality display. It also has strong performance for its category, which is important because it's rapidly becoming very competitive.

NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M:
Mid-range graphics card based on the GT 435M chip (GF108) with higher clock rates and DDR3 support.
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

2430M: Dual-core processor based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller. The CPU is clocked at 2.4 GHz (Turbo Boost 2.7-3 GHz) and the GPU at 650 (1200 MHz Turbo).» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.
14.0": 14 inch display size is a mixture between the small formats of subnotebooks and the 15 inch standard display. The reason why so many people like displays with medium size is, that this size is not exhausting for the eyes, does not need too much energy and the laptops can be kept quite compact.» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.
2.1 kg: These sub-notebooks weight less than the average of all notebooks, but represent a heavier class of weight among the sub-notebooks. 13 inch displays are normal for this class of weight.
Asus: ASUSTeK Computer Incorporated, a Taiwanese multinational company, produces motherboards, graphics cards, optical drives, PDAs, computer monitors, notebook computers, servers, networking products, mobile phones, computer cases, computer components, and computer cooling systems. The company's 2007 revenues reached US$6.9 billion. ASUS also produces components for other manufacturers. The Eee PC initiated the netbook boom in 2008.
77.5%: This rating is not convincing. The laptop is evaluated below average, this is not really a recommendation for purchase.
