Acer has delivered a delightful home media hub with the Aspire Ethos 5951G. It looks good, and performs well. Video was crisp and clear and the sound quality, once we’d installed the correct drivers, was excellent. While we initially thought it rather gimmicky, the removable touchpad/remote control turned out to be a surprisingly useful feature. If you’re after a multimedia PC for the lounge that’s ready to be part of an existing entertainment system, Aspire Ethos fits the bill nicely.

A good all-rounder with impressive battery life and that funky detachable MediaRemote touchpad. However, the mark-up for said is a touch too steep.

A nicely-designed, metal-clad multimedia powerhouse, the Ethos 5951G packs generous specifications, excellent connectivity and plenty of features for its price, not least of which is a unique and innovative removable touchpad that makes using the machine when hooked up to your TV or stereo a lot easier. If this feature appeals and you want to run some games, it's worth checking out – despite its lack of a Blu-ray drive and somewhat mediocre screen. Otherwise, these omissions combined with its slight premium means cheaper alternatives might be a better bet.

This is a very capable, desktop-replacement notebook. As well as being a high spec Windows 7 Pro platform, it offers good multimedia support, though you'll have to stretch your budget a bit higher for Blu-ray. Keyboard and the touchpad remote are highlights, but a fast processor and vast dollops of memory come close behind.

Multimedia center. With the Acer Aspire Ethos 5951G, Acer presents a multimedia machine with gaming qualities. Quad core processor, good graphics, 16 GB of RAM and a Blu-Ray drive are built into a stylish case. What more could we want?
Source: Slashgear

The Acer Aspire Ethos 5951G is a premium entertainment, multimedia, and gaming notebook that offers sophisticated styling, a solid build, and superb performance. It sports a Blu-ray drive, excellent sound quality, and boasts a unique removable multi-touch trackpad that doubles as a remote control, adding convenience as well as a “cool” factor. There’s not too much we can pick on about the laptop, except that perhaps it’s still not quite as portable as its 15.6-inch size might suggest. While it’s definitely more portable than the 18.4-inch 8951G, it still weighs a hefty 7.28 lbs—not something you’d want to be lugging around town. But as a home or dorm entertainment, internet, work, and play hub it’ll shine. Priced at $1,399.99.

In terms of software, Acer comes out swinging with its impressive set of proprietary utilities. You get Acer's set of system utilities, which includes Acer Backup Mananger, Acer ePower Management, Acer eRecovery Management, and Acer's CrystalEye Webcam utility. The last is basic but gives you some control over the Webcam's settings.

If you want a multimedia laptop that offers a sliver of portability, the Acer Aspire Ethos AS5951G-9694 is a decent choice, but not the best one in this price range. The detachable media remote is a good idea, but it’s not a very good touchpad, meaning users will need an external one for real productivity. Combine that with the lackluster display and the 15-inch Ethos only gets a so-so from me. Look into its big brother if the media remote intrigues you or the Dell XPS 15z if you want your media with more portability.

Acer's Aspire 5951G is a multimedia-focused laptop with some impressive specifications that could be just as comfortable in a home office as in the living room. We weren't convinced by the touchpad that doubles up as a remote control though - it's just too likely to go missing. At £850 it’s not a bad deal but if you want high-quality visuals then look elsewhere because the display really isn't up to scratch.

Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.
NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M:
Mid-range graphics card based on the GT 435M chip (GF108) with higher clock rates and DDR3 support.
NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M:
As the successor to the GeForce GT 445M, the GT 555M is available in many different versions based on different chips (GF106, GF116, GF108) with different graphics memory (128 Bit, 192 Bit, DDR3, GDDR5) and varying core speeds.

Intel Core i5:
2410M:
Dual-core processor based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller. The CPU is clocked at 2.3 GHz (Turbo Boost 2.6-2.9 GHz) and the GPU at 650 (1200 MHz Turbo).
Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
2630QM: Fast Quad-core processor based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller.
15.6: 15 inch display-variants are the standard and are used for more than the half of all notebooks. 15.4 inch display with 16:10 are the standard for notebook displays. However nowadays, more and more 16:9 displays with 15.6 inch appear. The reason why so many people like displays with medium size is, that this size is not exhausting for the eyes, does not need too much energy and the laptops can be kept quite compact.

3.3 kg:
This weight is average for notebooks. Therefore the numerous mass of laptops with 15 inch display fits in this class of weight.
3.3 kg:
79.42%: This rating is not convincing. The laptop is evaluated below average, this is not really a recommendation for purchase.
