Retro gaming enthusiasts and collectors alike have some good news ahead, as a new leak has stirred up the SEGA and LEGO community. Images of a new LEGO gift-with-purchase set numbered 40769 have surfaced online, revealing a LEGO brick-set replica of the iconic SEGA Genesis controller, which is also known as the SEGA Mega Drive in the United Kingdom.
Rumors circulating online suggest that this promotional item, branded under the Sonic the Hedgehog theme, will become available around September 8, 2025, after customers make purchases of over €130 or more at select LEGO stores.
From what we can tell so far, the set will feature 260 LEGO pieces and is targeted for, of course, adults, aged 18 and up, making it a lucrative LEGO set for retro console enthusiasts and collectors alike.
The leak showcases the LEGO box set featuring the three-button “A B C” SEGA Genesis controller layout, complete with a LEGO stand emblazoned in red. The promotional box artwork also features the Sonic the Hedgehog Logo towards the lower right corner of the box, along with the SEGA Genesis Logo and the LEGO logo on the box cover.
Leaks suggest that the SEGA Genesis LEGO replica will measure 15 by 10 centimeters, making the model true-to-size and a worthy showpiece for retro console fans on their shelves. Further leaks suggest that the front panel of the SEGA Genesis controller can be opened up to reveal a miniature recreation of Sonic the Hedgehog’s iconic Green Hill Zone, probably with a dedicated loop-filled lush landscape, paying homage to the original 1991 Sonic the Hedgehog game.
The SEGA Genesis launched in North America in 1989 and was known as the SEGA Mega Drive in other parts of the world. The Genesis sold an estimated 30.75 to 40 million units worldwide, with 20 million in the U.S. alone, making it SEGA’s most successful console. However, it did fall short of Nintendo’s SNES sales figures, which sold 49.1 million units worldwide.
LEGO’s dip into SEGA’s gaming history has been ongoing for quite some time, as the company has released Sonic-themed sets such as the 21331 Ideas Sonic The Hedgehog - Green Hill Zone, featuring minifigures as well.
It’s speculated that this GWP LEGO set will release alongside another unannounced larger Sonic The Hedgehog set, but take these rumors with a grain of salt.
