If you're after a big-screen laptop that's suitable for family use at home, Samsung's RC710 may appeal. Our version of this 17.3-inch machine will set you back around £750, but does it have the chops to keep the whole family entertained? The 17.3-inch Samsung RC710 offers a decent processor, screen and keyboard, but its boring design and sub-par gaming performance limit its appeal as an all-round entertainment laptop.

Large laptops tend to be characterised as ‘desktop replacements' - that is, they're designed to sit on a desk and not be moved very much, and used as a replacement for a desktop computer. The Samsung RC710 S02, with a 17.3in screen, isn't explicitly marketed as a desktop replacement, but it's unlikely to be most people's choice of portable computer. All in all, those who don't need portability will find this a good-value computer.

If you need a laptop for getting online, enjoying your media and staying in touch with friends and family, the RC710 is a great option, though best kept at home, thanks to the bulky build and limited battery life.

NVIDIA GeForce 315M: Slightly lower clocked GeForce 310M and therefore also based on the GT218 core that was introduced with the Geforce G210M. Entry-level graphics card that was introduced in late 2010.
Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.

480M: The Core i5-480M has only 3 MB L3 Cache (compared to the I7-620M) and clocks between 2.66-2.9 GHz (Turbo Mode). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.
17.30": This display size is a standard format for desktop replacements (DTR). The DTR laptops are heavier to carry, need more power, but texts are easy to read and high resolutions are no problem. DTR are mainly intended for stationary desk use, where weight and energy hunger don't matter. In return, you enjoy the advantages of high resolutions (more details, better legibility).» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.
2.9 kg:
With this weight, a laptop is rather heavier than average. Devices in this range shine more with screen size and performance than with mobility.

73.33%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
