Xiaomi is testing a new feature that it is calling MIUI Pure Mode. Supposedly, the mode prevents dangerous apps from being installed by disabling APK sideloading and background app installs. MIUI Pure Mode will be an optional feature.

According to a new report from ITHome, Xiaomi is expanding MIUI, albeit on a smaller scale than a major revision or the Enhanced Edition update that it is currently rolling out to devices. This time, Xiaomi is developing 'MIUI Pure Mode' designed to prevent the installation of malicious apps.

Apparently, Pure Mode will target two areas of Android that could inject into MIUI. On the one hand, MIUI Pure Mode will not allow apps to install in the background without your consent. On the other mode, the mode also disables the ability to sideload APK files, a useful tool in our opinion.

Thankfully, you can deactivate MIUI Pure Mode should you wish to re-enable both install methods. Currently, Xiaomi is testing MIUI Pure Mode in China, where up to 5,000 devices will be issued with the appropriate beta software. It is unclear if Xiaomi plans to integrate MIUI Pure Mode in MIUI 12.5 Enhanced Edition or MIUI 13, if at all.

Regardless, Xiaomi claims that 40% of the apps that people install on its smartphones do not pass an in-house security test. Furthermore, 10% of all apps were classified as a security risk. Overall, MIUI Pure Mode sounds like a good idea for many people, but only if it remains optional.
