Toshiba reveals Qosmio T851 notebook with glasses-free 3D capabilities

Toshiba’s latest 3D laptop doesn’t require glasses and can display 2D and 3D images simultaneously

Toshiba has been no stranger to the glasses-free 3D game, and they continue their 3D entries with the Qosmio T851 notebook. In addition to its glasses-free 3D powers, Toshiba is also touting the 15.6” laptop as the world’s first 3D laptop that is able to “simultaneously display 3D and 2D content in separate windows in a single screen”.

Toshiba has managed to achieve the simultaneous 2D and 3D content by using “Active Lens” technology that controls light polarization on certain parts of the screen. By using the integrated webcam, the notebook tracks the user’s face and eye position and adjusts the viewing angles accordingly. In addition, the laptop is also capable of real-time 2D to 3D conversion by using Toshiba’s “SpursEngine” image processor.

As for the actual specs that are behind the Qosmio’s 3D capabilities, the notebook will come with a 15.6” display with a Full HD resolution of 1920x1080 pixels (1366x768 when viewing in 3D) along with an NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M GPU and an Intel Core i5-2410M processor. Otherwise, the notebook comes with 8GB of RAM, a 750GB HDD, a Blu-Ray player and Harmon-Kardon stereo speakers.

According to Toshiba’s press release, the laptop should be available sometime in July for an unknown price. However, customers outside of Asia might be out of luck, as Toshiba has only announced the laptop in Japan for now.
