Oregon Scientific announced the Meep! Tablet

Oregon Scientific, a US-based manufacturer of personal electronics, has reportedly announced that the company will be entering the kid’s tablet market and in the process, it is apparently “leaving cartridge-based devices behind in the dust”. The maker will introduce its latest Android-running slate for children aged 6 and up, called Meep! at the Toy Industry Association's (TIA) 109th American International Toy Fair, which is now taking place in New York.

Little is known about the tablet’s specs as of now. The manufacturer has, however, issued a press release stating that the Meep! slate will be equipped with a 7-inch touchscreen display and will ship with an unspecified Android operating system. Furthermore, the device houses a Wireless LAN adapter (no word on Bluetooth connectivity), an SD card reader slot for expanding the storage capacity and a built-in gyro sensor.

The Meep! is a tablet for kids and as such, it requires a certain degree of ruggedness. Oregon Scientific claims that their new slate offers a tough design and comes with a rubber silicon sleeve for added protection. In addition, kids will reportedly be able to download various movies, videos, e-books and apps to the tablet’s internal memory. According to the maker, web content can be monitored through parental controls that are adjustable “remotely on any computer or mobile device with a browser and an Internet connection”.

The company hasn’t yet disclosed much details about the tablet (including price and availability), but interested customers can apparently sign-up for any forthcoming updates on Meep!’s dedicated page.
